Our real interent is up! yeah! I just typed enough to let you all know we were still alive and no real damage.

I dislike that little computer, very touchy about typing, my old lappy won't load the software for the broadband so I can't use it on my lappy.

so glad to see others checking in, sounds like so far, we ponders have made it.
Walked my pup three times, she was house bound with us and needs her yard walk and hunt. The ground is like mush. I think I will get the tractor out and try to smooth out the wheel marks left by the trucks that delivered the rock dust and propane tank, some big ruts. Tomorrow.............not today lol. Should be able to put a load in the bucket and run over the ruts push them back down.

The pond was cloudy with all the input of rain, stirred lots up, but already clearing up nicely. My bog filter does a great job in keeping it nice.

laughing jw, I will get to work tomorrow. Need to net the bottom of the pond, get it ready to shut the pump off for the winter, probably around 12/1. Unless we turn colder.

It takes about 5 minutes to pull the pump, so can even run out in a snow storm to get it if I misjudge the weather.

Addy, you pull your main pump, but you leave another one running, or just use your bubbler to keep the ice open? I can't remember! I'm hoping I can leave everything running until I have to worry about ice forming on the waterfall. Then it will be a matter of draining the Skippy, unhooking the lines and draining them, unhooking the bottom pump and probably using the smaller skimmer pump (1200 gph) to shoot water straight up to keep the ice open when it arrives. Got it all figured out in my head, should take short amount of time to unhook it all, longer to rinse out the filter media in the Skippy and get it stored in the garage for winter. I took out my skimmer box last year, but I assume it could actually stay in the pond, right? I have the same brand in each pond, so just wondering if it's ok to leave it in, or best to take them out. Either way is fine with me, just don't want to crack them if I leave them in the water. Part is above the water, most is under water. I would weight them down with large rocks so no worries of them moving around. Ideas anyone?

CE I was wondering the same thing about the skimmer. Mine would be hard to pull since its thru the liner. When I ran hard pipe for my plumbing I put in 2 rubber couplings for winterizing and a ball valve on my water line that is ran from the house to the pond. One rubber coupler is inside my skimmer box and that's for the pump to be pulled and the other is right below my above ground bog. I got some rubber plugs for the pipes so after I drain them and suck the water out they will be plugged and ready for winter. Still unsure about my bog pipes. Not sure how those will do.

Does everyone cut back all of there pond plants like the cat tails and pickle rush for winter or just let them do there own thing. Same goes for the bog plants. Cut them back now or cut them all down in the spring.

Ce I pull the external pump. If my bog waterfall decided to freeze up, the pond would be emptied pretty quickly overflow the bog wall.
I set up my ap100 run the air in the walk out area of the pond, ie away from the deep water. My skimmer is installed in the liner (pool skimmer) last year I took a plastic bag, stuffed it with bubble wrap, stuffed the bag into the skimmer displacing the water. Had to weigh the bag down with rocks. Then it never froze lol, but this year who knows.

Try bubble wrap and a plastic bag, worked great for me., pushes all the water out of the skimmer.
I leave water in my bog lines, (under the pea gravel), skimmer lines, (they run under the water below the liner along the bog wall) The first winter, we had 8 inches of ice on the pond, the bog lines, even those partly out in the open did fine. I leave the ends open so the ice can expand out if they freeze. The pump is installed with ball valves that unscrew from the piping or rubber couplings so I can pull it and just leave the lines in place. They drain a little, I don't worry about sucking water out.

The bog plants............depends on my mood and time, last year I cut them back in the fall, this year have not even thought about them. Might leave them be until spring. Then before I flip on the pump I walk in the bog and just clean out any dead plants.

I have my cattails all cut down to bog water level, since they were about 90% dead already. Most other bog plants are still green and look very alive. I need to get the lilies all cut back and pots put back into the water. Should have done that a week ago when I was literally IN the pond trimming off dead leaves and stems. Darn! I'll have to figure out a way to pull the pots that I cannot reach from the outside of the pond, maybe get a really stiff, sturdy net used only for the heavy stuff purpose, like others have suggested. Will be tricky, as some are on top of little "caves" (upside down stackable shelves) and I can't remember if they will stay on the bottom, or if they will try to float! Haha Both of my skimmer boxes are on a shelf inside my liner, so would be extremely easy to pull out, so I think I will do that again. The lines that run outside of the pond on top of the ground and would freeze, are all on a slope (one to the waterfall, the other to the stream) and I will drain them and leave them laying on the ground as I did last year with the waterfall line. It did fine since it was empty. I use septic line, black hard plastic/rubber type with ribs. Very flexible and easy to work with, so far so good!
I think the water clover and penny wart will just die when they are ready, then I'll clean, as Addy says, "depends on my mood and time". :) I still have not pulled my tropical lilies, but with the 32 degrees at night lately, probably will do that this weekend, make sure they don't die. I think they are fine, since the water is still high 40's, but need to get them out and stored for the winter. Then I will be done, except I move all my metal art, solar lights, etc. inside for the winter. That will get done maybe this weekend, too.
