Trying to get an update (overall storm for the whole seaboard) on the weather channel but the "update" hasnt come on yet:-( Hope those in the worst path stay safe and check in when possible. Starting to get a bit gusty up here. They are saying gusts around 40 mph right now, but going to guess we are at a consistent 25-30 mph. Already have a couple of trees down, not anything big, but of course it had to break a rail on the fence:-(

Did get a bit of a chuckle a little while ago. Ran out for coffee and saw the youngest. She was supposed to work 8-4, but the big boss decided they are closing up at 11... daughter has it in her mind that she is swinging by her boyfriends house when she gets out LOL... Sorry, I dont think so. Leaving soon to pick her, and her truck up. 40 mph winds really arent that bad, but for a 17 yr old kid, well, I would feel better if she wasnt driving.

good idea as not enough knowledge behind the wheel can be a killer .I have driven for a long long time and still find that bad weather conditions make me leary .A open area and a big gust of wind and off the road you go and it does not matter what size vehicle you are driving .I see they are saying on the weather channel that the eye is more defined now .

Waiting for the phone to ring. After they close to the public, they still have a few things to do to close the store... She really is a good driver CONSIDERING she is just a kid, and she is driving an Expedition, so dont think a 40 mph gust would be too bad, but more worried about other drivers and her reaction time (aka for another driver or a flying branch - several of those down). We live in a tourist area, so she had to learn to be agressive (or never get anywhere), but her defensive skills are still weak. Thank God this is the youngest. I dont think I could survive teaching a 4th kid to drive LOL.

So many are sending prayers to you all. Have confidence, stay as calm as you can.

We are up to 1.5 inches of rain, not much wind yet, under 10 mph, the high winds are supposed to hit tonight. The worse rain was to hit tonight, we are getting more right now than they said we would.

The tree roots will be in soggy soil easy to blow over. We made sure all cars etc are away from trees.

My pond is overflowing big time, we have rivers running down the slopes. So far no new overflow into the pond, must have sloped the land correctly.

I had to go out and trench around the propane tank so the water won't fill the hole and float the tank. We had bermed the dirt around the tank, the new dirt sank with all the wet so our berm sank. We have a major flow down the slope the tank is in, the water from the front of the house is directed down that slope.
They did not get propane in it and with the new dirt it could float if the hole filled with water.

Cant help but worry about those in the strike zone... My biggest fear for them is the flooding. As long as people are able to stay inside, the winds shouldnt be too much of an issue. Later, we are projected to have 70-80 mph winds, and even being the type that drives around to check out the storm damages, will be staying in well before that point. I do want to sneak out in a couple of hours to see how the beaches look, but after that, home we shall stay, unless hubby gets an emergency call (on the list of things hubby does, we also do tree work), but will only go out for a real emergency, and not something that can wait. An example would be the 2005 Blizzard, we were still plowing. Hubby had to open a road so an ambulance could get in... not going out for something stupid.

Craig, what type of K9 do you have? In your avatar, it looks like a hunting dog, so assume you also have different dog as your K9 companion.

Right on the hunting dog. But she is my partner. German Shorthair pointer mix. She is trained as a livescent wilderness dog. I.e. she is trained to find only live bodies, not deceased. No birding for her. She's been trained to ignore birds and most other wildlife. Still having problems with the occasional squirrel and deer but she chases it up a tree or out of the area and gets right back to work.

Mostly runaway kids, (often austic and troubled), Alzheimer patients, suicidal subjects or victims of disaster. We've done some rubble pile and building collapse work but we are not trained like the FEMA earthquake dogs who do the heavy rubble. That requires a different type of training, (and even more extensive than what I do). But we would and can do small buildings like single family homes after tornados and wide area searching after flooding. She was just certified this summer so we have only been in a few searches. Still waiting for her first live find. Been in training over two years.

Storm not too bad yet here. Like a nor'easter pretty much. But worse yet to come. Water just started creeping in basement which is not a good sign here as I usually have a dry basement and my ground perc's well. Haven't had water down there for 4 or 5 years. No streams or rivers nearby. That means the ground is pretty wet already and that doesn't bode well for the trees as the higher winds come tonight. Also, it means more run off into the streams.

If you have a water proof tarp that is big enough drape it over the tank, place stone one the edges so rain will flow away from your tank. I seem to recall that the cap of the tank may be high enough to provide an tent effect. Be careful!

Just went out to bring out the generator. Forgot it's 200+lbs. Wheels sunk in the mud. I guess we should have set something up in advance. Book that came with it says don't cover it but also says to keep cords dry! I'm not sure this will work out. May just have to fire up the small one for the ponds. I'm going to have the power co. come out after this is all done and help us get this set up the right way. I'm just hoping the power doesn't go off at all but they are saying not if the power goes out but when.

We were going to tarp it, it is dug in on our slope. The rain falling on it is not the issue, it is the run off from our drive, goes right down that hill . I took our hoe and did a nice deep trench (again) around it and down the hill. I did it yesterday, but without the rain falling missed a few highs and lows, now we have a nice muddy river bypassing the tank.

Maybe yours will stay running! We have a small generator does 5000 watts, I think honey said. It is sitting in the garage ready to run, even remembered gas! Enough to have some electricity. The big pond I am not worried about at all, the fish will be fine even if it quits running. The shubbies in the house tank will need air flow, higher population density.

Addy I was watching your cameras a bit ago and rain is coming down on your new tub pond. Noticed the camera zooming in and then out. You must be checking the drainage of your newly installed tub pond. Have tv on and watching the coming of the big storm Sandy. Looks like it is going to be bad! Talking on the news right now about Maryland, New Jersey, New York etc. Stay safe and praying for all of you in Sandy's path.
