Herz that is going to be nice when you finish. Where did you get the tape you used on your liner? Are you going to build up the new creek/falls very high?

The flowers are daffodils, and they are beautiful! They will multiply every year, too, that's the best part. Next year each individual plant you have this year, will likely have 4-6 plants next year. When they get to be too many and don't bloom as well, separate and share them. :)
That's going to look really nice, Herz, the addition and new water feature. Keep posting pics. We love it!

Thanks for posting all the photo's herz and looks like you've got a good plan going there and will be interesting to see what you do w/ the rocks and how the water flows like in a cavern.

I have a few bigger rocks, as in I roll them not lift them so I am going to try to do something with those. I still have to get them out and formulate a plan. It will probably only be a couple feet high if that. I am going to leave all the excess liner in case I want to change it up later. Will just fold it and tuck it in as everyone else here says they do. I have an idea in my head, just hard to put into words. :) Plus I usually do minimal planning on stuff like this since I like to adjust on the fly a lot, so will kind of figure it out as I do it.

Thanks Patti,
I couldn't remember and thats exactly what happened to my mom, she gave me a dozen bulbs or so and I spread them out. Finally decided to add some color to all of my evergreens, but thats what you get in the woods around here at times are scattered flowers so it goes with the look/style I wanted. Today I placed rocks to add some falls to the stream and added a cave by the deck. I will post pics tomorrow or sunday. The waterfall rocks are just sitting loose until I lower the pond level to dry out the stream so I can use waterfall foam and seal them all. The new project on top will probalby come after that is done.

I used a hand truck to move rocks that were to big .I have a hand truck with a wider and longer bottom and even had to use a board to help .I even used an appliance dolly for one of my rocks in my landscaping .I did it all by myself and so much easier with the dolly .I even used a furniture moving one i built out of 2x4's and some wheels and carpet padding and ran a chain through it and hooked it to my ride on lawn mower and just slowly but surely moved it .I have a cart for the lawn mower but even with a a board and leverage i could not get it on .

Tmann,

The tape I got at Menards, just look in the roofing areas. I got a double sided and then the single sided when I built the stream. They should have it at home depot, lowes, etc too. Can be a little pricey, but I like it to avoid wicking for liners, probably could have in this situation just got away with the roofing sealant goop, because it is a downhill overlap that the water will just fall over, but I had the tape left over anyway, so I figured why not use it.

Sissy,
I roll them when I am near where I am going to use them (or all over before the sams wheelbarrow), but now what I do is I tip the wheelbarrow forward and roll it over the lip and then pull the wheelbarrow back. Don't have a handtruck to use, otherwise that would work great also.

Herz, Last year I didn't feed until May. It might be a good idea to test your water because if there is a lot ammonia/nitirite buildup before the pond cycles properly it could create problems. One year I had disastrous results when I started feeding the first warm day and continued doing it early in the year.

Thanks for the advice Keith, I only tried 2 times, once when it was really warm and they kind of ate, but they ignored it the second time I tried so I will hold off until late april/may like you suggest.

Been doing a lot on the pond so here are some updates. Decided to make the small cave I had for the fish bigger.

Here is the area where the cave will be.

Here is the finished cave.

DSC05845.JPGDSC05847.JPGDSC05848.JPG

When I was pulling off the old rocks I saw one of the fish in it. The space is wide open underneath so they have room to turn around and get back out. Its probably at least 18" wide if not more.

I lowered the pond level so I could begin adding the waterfalls to the stream (a success fractured with a few minor failures due to rushing in the presence of a 3 1/2 year old :) ) but I will cover that later. So here is a better picture of the cave with the water level lower. Gives you an idea of the depth.

DSC05888.JPGDSC05889.JPGDSC05890.JPG

I also managed to finally abuse the wheelbarrow enough with oversized rocks that I cracked it enough that I don't think epoxy will do the trick. So I jerry rigged it with some left over pond liner, some screws, and some little round pieces of trunk from a sapling stick that I had, so I can haul dirt with it until I get a new one. I added the pieces of wood so my daughter or myself would not poke ourselves with the screws that were sticking out.

Looks pretty funny but I will find out how functional it is in a minute, gonna haul some dirt to finish the feature at the top of the upper pool.

I like the cave........................not so much the wheel barrow, lol, but hey if it works and gets the job done who cares what it looks like. You'll be out sitting at the pond enjoying the looks of it not the wheel barrow!

Thanks JW,
I will probably get a new one for my birthday at the end of May, but this will last until then.

As I mentioned earlier I got a little impatient and overzealous and tried to set up the waterfalls in the stream without a sitter and keeping an eye on my daughter to make sure she didn't get the waterfall foam on her hands. So it worked to an extent but does have leaks. I am trying to get them waterproof so that when it turns on each day it doesn't have to fill up lowering the level in the pond. But I think I will be able to get most of it fixed, but here is where the waterfalls are and the problems associated with each. A big part of this is I am doing it so I can go back and read this and know where I need to fix the problems without having to rerun water through it again. I mostly am waiting for warmer weather as I found out first hand the waterfall foam doesn't work as well when it is colder out. But live and learn and pay for impatience, but at least I found the Great Stuff Pond/Waterfall foam at Menards for only 8.98 a can regular price, so that isn't bad.

The biggest mistakes I made was not removing all the stones in the stream when I placed the base rocks for each falls, using the foam when it was too cold, rushing :), and trusting at the top of the stream the rocks were well sealed.

So for starters, since last year I wanted to raise the water level in the upper pool. So I built the following to accomplish this:

DSC05867.JPGDSC05868.JPG

But it seams to leak around the other rocks. I did use foam under these and so I might not be able to pull those up like I thought about. Here you can see where the water leaks out from.

DSC05944.JPG

It is leaking from the left, the middle and the right.

DSC05931.JPGDSC05936.JPG

So to avoid digging up the big flat rocks, not sure how well that would work, I think I will try some more waterfall foam at those 3 outlets and around the sides/fronts of the rocks to block it and then on the back side too if that doesn't do the trick. My plan is to have all areas dry as I can and ready to go on a warm day when I do it so that I can use each can of foam to its fullest without having it dry up or only using half a can.

Here is the first falls I built, the right way by moving all the rocks underneath.

DSC05875.JPG

Unfortuneatly it sits under the water level of the pond when it is full, but if I can't get these fixed and the level drains as it fills each morning it will look fine I think. Or I will add some rocks to the top for the water to go around, will be fun either way.

Here is the second falls.

DSC05896.JPG

I did pull all the loose rocks out from the bottom. The pond full water level is above the bottom leaks, but it must also leak along the sides somewhere because I tried running the hose above it to see if it filled up to the level of the waterfall rock, but it kept finding a way around it. The pond level goes about halfway up the rock, so the only real leak I have to fix is the side. I can't move the rocks next to the falls, but I can pull the ones behind those and add foam on each side of the rocks next to the waterfall stone.

These are the leaks I saw on the bottom.

DSC05897.JPGDSC05901.JPG

This is the 3rd falls and I made.

DSC05906.JPG

It seems to hold water because it dams up, but leaks on the bottom.

DSC05908.JPGDSC05909.JPG

So I will attempt to plug those up.

The last falls also has the same problem as the dam at the top of the upper pool. It sits over a big flat rock that was in the stream that I don't think I sealed. This one I might be able to lift up, but first I will try adding the foam around where it appears to leak.

DSC05910.JPG

Here you can see where the water streams out.

DSC05912.JPGDSC05913.JPG

So I will try to fix these when the weather hits 60 to 65 degrees and the foam will work the best. I guess I will probably not be able to completely waterproof them, but I will definitely exhaust all my options out of sheer stubborness. :) But this will be on hold until the weather cooperates, until then I will finish the feature on the upper pool, but I will not have that up and running until I start the filter again, just waiting on that until I know that I don't have to worry about any consistent freezing temps at night.

Hi Herz, That looks like a lot of work and not easy with a screaming 3 1/2 year old. I have a stupid question. Why didn't you just bury liner underneath the rocks of the top pool so water doesn't leak out? My whole waterfall is built on top of liner.

I think Herz does have liner under all of that. The problem is that he wants the water to back up behind the rock, then go over the rocks, but it keeps going under or to the side of the rocks. I had the same problem when I redid my waterfall. Mine was easier, though, since the water fell from one to the next, and most of the water stayed on top to the next rock. But, I like how you're doing this, Herz, very neat idea. The stream I'm building will simply have flat flagstone rocks laying on the bottom of it, and the water will run over them however it pleases. :) Probably shouldn't have looked at this thread, because now I have other ideas ....
