send heat here to Canada please!! It is not too bad today, at least the rain has stopped. I got three inches of rain in this glass beaker that I left out by the pond. Won't be watering anything anytime soon, ground will be wet for a while I think. Right now we are at 14 degrees Celsius, or 57 degrees Fahrenheit. In a couple days the sun will be back out and about, and I will be recording new video and pictures with my new Samsung Galaxy 5 super cell phone!!!

Hot here this weekend. Very humid and 90's temps. Need to get in the pond and groom the lilies so might be a good day for that. They are liking this heat.

That is the only thing good as i can't have plants in the pond because of the koi .But when I had my lilies in the pond a couple of years ago they did not bother them .Not sure why the difference

the bigger the koi, the more they destroy the plants. If your pond has nothing green growing, like string algae, then they tend to go after the plants even more. I keep only large grasses and sedges and hornwort in with the really big fat old koi. They come half out of the water to eat the grass and rip the aquatic mint too, but these plants are large and planted in very large baskets, which sit right at the water level, so it is not easy for them to get into baskets. They can also eat large amount of hornwort, but that plant is a quick growing weed and this time of the year it outgrows what they can eat. I also throw excess hornwort that grows too thick from the bottom pond, into the top pond for the koi as well.

Fall weather is definitely here. The Sun, even when bright isn't that hot. Last night I did some maintenance on my pond.

- I've begun to look at algae as a marker for nutrients in the water. For the past 2 weeks or so, I've begun to feed heavily to allow the fish to build up fat for the winter and I've noticed that string algae built up a lot under the waterfall.

- Will be changing to wheat germ food with less protein soon. The wheat germ label says it can continue to feed to 50F/10C but I'll stop at my usual 55F/13C.

- In doing maintenance with my moving media filter I've noticed that cut up straws for some reason don't seem to be building up a layer of bacteria whereas the K1 does get that dirty film so next season I will be scrapping all my cut up straws and replacing them with K1.

- After reading some of the posts here I found a fish farm nearby on Craigslist but I think it's already too late to add more fish to the pond.

- I'm going to start clearing out dying plant material from the pond. This season has been very short here in Seattle. I don't think the pond started to warm up until June or so, so this season is only 3 months long. Almost not enough for beneficial bacteria to really get going.

- The baby squirrel is back and seems to want to play with me. Should I feed it?
- Had some fun playing with the infra-red thermometer. The water is about 59F. The ground in the Sun was 88F. Mr. Frog resting in the shade was 62F.

If it was me I'd feed it............heck everyone feeds the squirrels don't they? They love the Hazelnut trees around here but I seldom see them on our property. They seem to hang closer to the woods. So if you have any Hazelnut trees near you pick a bunch and that little bugger will love you!
