Weather was super nice last week until yesterday, then mid 80's and 90's today. Going back to 70's and then 80's. See-saw again. But, I'm glad it's not sticking on the 90's like it did 2 years ago. I don't think we got lower than the 90's for June, July and August! That was the drought year from he**.
Colleen, what do you do with your tropical plants when it gets cold? Do you put it in your greenhouse maybe? I love that red leafed one, is that the red banana you referred to? I have tried growing the red/green banana trees (something like a Mojo or Mojito or something like that it's called), but never had much luck. Got one by default with a Thalia I got this year, and it's growing, but not very heartily. Same with the one that is in the pot with the cannas.
So sorry to hear about all the fires for those of you in the NW! Hope you get some much needed rain and soon!
I think that sounds like a wonderful vacation to me, drive from IL west and north, and then visit all my pond friends along the way! Colleen, I would LOVE to go into Canada for a day! Just how far are you from the NW US anyhow? Boyfriend said his family is planning a family reunion north of Seattle, an island that begins with a "W", I think he said, and that will be in September. I have lots of vacation time, more than Joe has, so I'll be going along for sure. I think I get 22 days per year vacation, plus 3 personal days, plus 1 sick day per month, so 12 more of them. I can roll over the sick days, and have enough saved up could take off for 6 months if something happened medically, and get full pay. Personal days have to be used each year, but can carry over up to 2 years worth of vacation days. I usually have somewhere between 10-15 vacation days I carry over each year. I earn them each month. So, if I am in the area, believe me, I will do my best to make plans to visit more of my pond friends!

I am over in Alberta, and not too far from the Wild Horse Border crossing, maybe about an hour and a half from that border. Wild Horse border is in Montana and it would sure be nice to see you CE, we could sit and have drinks by my pond, that would be really cool! Let me know in advance if you can and then I can make sure I have that day off work.

This is the first year for the tropical red banana's and I am not sure if i will dig them out and move to greenhouse for winter as they get really large and my greenhouse is not that big. I paid only 7 dollars for each and I don't ever get away for tropical vacation in years, and just wanted to have them even if only for the summer.

It rained good today while I was at work, so I don't have to water! It is usually pretty rare for us to get rain in the month of July, so this was a welcome event and it will help keep the dust down on the dirt road down by the river.

Storms here today as predicted w/ lots of rain. Not a good day to visit my sister w/ a long drive up north so I think I will be canceling that in hopes for a nice day soon. But it is a good day for the firefighters trying to control those fires east of us. Thank you for that!

CE that must be Whidbey Island which is not far from us. What fun that will be for you too if you get to pop in and visit pond members in September.

I cleaned out all the big filters today, two last night, well after Midnight too!! What happened was I was outside watering something and shorted out some plug in lights, which caused the circuit to trip. Then something happened to the one pump, the biggest pump quit and would not start again. So this morning I went threw my collection of pumps and found a replacement pump that is smaller bit, so the flow of water going to the top pond is reduced. Now I have discovered that is the reason I was missing some water every night from the bottom pond. The slightly reduced flow means less water to top pond, which means the level of water in the top pond is slightly lower. The big fish in the top pond tend to splash a lot of water out and over the edge of top pond when they get swimming fast, and they do swim really fast some days! Pond water is still pretty cool at about 70 degrees, so they will have more oxygen to get swimming fast as cooler water means more oxygen.

En0ugh rambling... Temperature right now is 86 degrees, and it is very humid. While working outside this morning it was so humid I could hardly stand it, but working in the cool pond water felt good and I got half wet reaching for the filters to clean them. We are under a severe weather watch, the conditions are perfect for a super storm according to the weather report. Three major storms are all converging on Southern Alberta and Medicine Hat looks SmAcK in the MiddLe!

Hail be to Mary, but please don't Hail on my ponds cause they never looked better all year!
