I feel like that bad guy here correcting misconceptions.

You are just as likely to get a lighting strike with or without stuff turned off.

Lighting simply follows the most conductive path to ground. You would not think that looking at the way it strikes but it is true.

We turn things off to protect them should a not so close strike raise the voltage on the line. A near hit will bypass the switch to the better bet is to unplug stuff.

If anyone rather I keep my mouth shut PM me and I will be happy to. I am not trying to show off.

Nope, your opinion is welcome, Howard.
I was baffled when it happened to me. Whole house surge protector did nothing. Everything plugged into a USB port got it. Heavier duty electrical items survived.
I could not find where the actual lightning hit.

Going to be another wet one here today in Western Wa. I agree w/ John H. we need some steady sun for awhile to give us some hope!
I might get wet today on my walk unless I time it just right if there is such a thing as a just right today :bye2:

Just send the rain here. Standard text about drought.

Mitch is it maybe that everything electronic, having transistors, failed but the stuff without was ok.

Did the whole house surge protector get fried? Has it been tested since the strike?

The protection technology I know of uses a type of electronic part that can absorb energy when voltage on the line exceeds some limit. They can only absorb so much. I expect that is how the one you have works but that is a guess.

Wish I could send the rain to you HTH,it is pouring really, really heavy here right now. We don't get much thunder and lightning here but when we do it is an exciting treat for us. Never had any strikes on our house except once after a lightning storm we lost a halogen light w/ a dimmer switch attached to it. Didn't like that light anyways as that light got fry an egg hot! No halogen lights for me again.

I enjoy all your comments Howard, it helps to enlighten me and gives me things to consider, and Mitch you have been a big help too, and your words of wisdom give me much to think about... even if I don't follow instructions too well... the weather thread good to vent, bad weather caused my flooding anyway, and sooner or later somebody else may end up in flood, and it's good, cause that misery just loves company hahaha!

In the bright side of things today it is not RAINING yet....:)

The pond looks so very nice today, and I am outside enjoying the morning in my bug proof out door living room, and it really is a living room! The view of my pond is so relaxing while I type away..... :)

The birds are really singing up a very big storm today. Their cheerful chips are just music to my ears, only wish you where here to hear them too! :)

We are on the road to to recovery, water levels are going down and hubby was just so very happy, it made me so very happy to see him happy, cause he is the light of my life!! :)

It's true. Lightening will take the path of least resistance. We haven't had problems with lightening storms and our stuff getting fried. The city recently put all utility's underground. We have no power poles standing on our side of the city. Two years ago when a tornado came thru, the houses that had been hit still had power.

Howard, the surge protector is still showing green in the master panel, so I'm assuming it's fine. Haven't had it checked. Electricians are not easy to come by here.

Colleen, you're welcome, and another thing, if you're running a generator, the police know already know you're there. ;) They would hear it on one of their patrols.
For all they know, you could be a potential looter and helping yourselves to your neighbor's valuables, all the while claiming you don't want to leave your home for whatever reason.
Also, folks are definitely attempting their own home repairs, and it would be terrible if the city turned on the electricity just as someone was mucking with their own electrical system and someone wound up getting killed.
Stay cautious with what you do and you can't be too careful right now. :)

Talk about crazy weather! We had a storm come up here late afternoon yesterday that started out w/ black skies and then big winds and pouring rain w/ thunder and lightning. The radio said somebody even spotted a funnel cloud! We hardly ever get thunder and lightning. Today right now it is pouring to beat the band again w/ threats by the w-man of more thunder and lightning. Where oh where is my sunshine? Ha, I hear it will be sunny and 80F here on Friday...............hoping it's the truth. Schizo weather

Same here, ICSD. Poured at work, then stopped sun out. Got home, had .6" of rain during the day. Outside, sun out, thunder, here comes the rain. Got inside before poured, but 5 minutes later, sun coming out. Then over and over again. Finally decided to just stay inside. LOL Should be awesome rainbows somewhere with this rain and then sun going on ...
