Well its supposed to be summer here, but its cold and raining, mind you not the sort of cold I see many of you lot have. It snows about 20 minutes from here most winters, even if only for a day or two but I won't ever have to worry about my ponds freezing over.

Glad you made it home safe and congrats on all the new little ones @CountryEscape and by the way.................your boss just joined the forum
Hahaha no way that will happen! I sometimes talk about her on FB, and she DOES have a FB account, but never goes on it, and surely never looks at my stuff. :)

@sissy what brand heater is that? I have the same problem with my de-icer - it's like a bobber that tilts sideways with every little breeze. It's fine when it's on ice or the hole is small, but when it melts a good sized hole it just sloooooooowly lists to one side!
Lisa, I have had that happen with my horse water tank heater. What I have found helps a LOT is propping the cord so it is above the tank, not laying to the side. If the cord is above the heater (use a stake in the ground, and tie the cord to it about 2' above the water level) that seems to take care of the tipping issue.

200 watts but they also say they come in bigger wattages .You can get options for it also ,I read there are holders for those cut outs .So far it has not moved even with the heavy rains last night and the strong winds .Since it is so big it will keep a nice big hole open .I will see if the pond ices over again and see if it works like said.Fish have been checking it out

I "liked" some of your posts about your temps dropping 40-50 degrees within 24 hours, but I would have preferred a "dislike" button instead. I was lucky, only got sleet and little bit of snow. Sleet is very driveable, but the following days it gets more slick, unless the sun comes out to melt it off the roads. I'm home for 3 days, and the sun is shining today. Yay!!! Temp is only about 11 right now, but going up to 21. Highs in 20's and lows in single digits to teens for the next 4-5 days, then 30-40's again! Yippee!!!!

I had my cord with my other heater hung on the bridge and high winds would push the cord and cause the heater to lift out of the water

Oh darn! I have always used water tank heaters, but your low profile heater looks perfect for our ponds. I've not used any heaters for this is my third winter. I like having water moving to keep opening in the ice better. I think the circulation is good for the fish as well. BUT, does anyone remember Randy from Indiana? I got my first 5 koi from him, a private breeder. He lost a bunch of his koi this year with a faulty heater, it was shorting out. I'm a chicken when it comes to electricity, I HATE to get shocked, so not sure how you check for that, other than putting your hand in the water. Yikes!!! Anyhow, he thought he lost everything, but later posted on his FB page that he has lots of babies left, and a few that are about 10", but he bought some new breeders last year, and fears most of them are gone. :(

Ratings were good on it so figure since the cat broke the power cord to my other heater by me chasing the cat off the pond and the bitter cold made the power cord fragile .This was from Dr Foster and Smith with free shipping .I figured I would give it a try since it is so big .Heater scare me but what options do you have for an opening in the pond .I remember you got your fish from him ..I use a watt tester on my pumps and my heater every once in awhile. It is the kill a watt one .Sad to say but we are at the mercy of electricity and fault stuff

I want to get the plug in tester next but seems they are always sold out here .This is some of my go to products for safety .Only thing is with the Kill a watt tester is you need the extender for it because of the deep boxes .These to me are a must have for electricity .

I have the same deicer I'm not sure it does the job because it gets trapped in ice and I have no way of telling if the tiny holes around the perimeter stay open...I was hoping that it would at least keep the water from freezing around itself

I was not sure about it but since my winters are not bad I figured I would give it a try.Thing is it says heater not de-icer .But even my other one which was 250 watts never kept much open and when it turned sideways it did not keep anything open ,which was often
