I've not used heaters in last 2 winters, this is my 3rd. They cost so much to use constantly, and if the water freezes, you really need to thaw a hole before turning them on. BUT, I've found using my skimmer pumps tied to a milk crate, sunk to the bottom and aiming the water flow to the surface works great at keeping a hole in the surface. In the extreme cold temps we have had lately (negative air temps for almost a week at night, VERY unusual for this area), the pumps make a cone/cave looking thing on the surface, but kept moving the water around, small hole in the cone. Now, with warm temps last 3-4 days, goldfish pond is totally thawed out, koi pond about 1/2 thawed out, and koi pond bog still running. (first time goldfish pond bog started running over the edge with the thick ice, so had to shut it off.)
Horses, dogs (have Boston Terrier puppies again) and barn cats all doing well.
Oh, and my daughter now has 3 kids - twins born in February! I'm in Grammy heaven! My son and DIL also had their first in March, so I went from 1 grand daughter that is now 2.5 years old to 4 in less than a month. Woohoo! Now, if I could just get them to all move back to IL ... like that's going to happen. Good thing I love to travel.
