When I net the bottom of the pond, fall or spring, I pull a lot of it up, sort it out, toss it back in. I do not trim it, do not cut, basically do nothing to it. It lays there does whatever it feels like doing and regrows.
The stream pond looked like a dead mess once the ice cube melted, within a few days you could see new growth starting up. I was going to pull some of it out, but then waited it out, it all grew and grew great.
You can see how gross the pond looked before it started growing. All looked dead or rotted, some growth to the right side of the picture. This is a shallow fishless pond that does freeze up solid.
