Found the blue/white flowered one. It's called Blue Star Lithodora and can't take cold lower than -10. I have some here but it's a sold blue flowered one and it it gets too cold here it turns black and all the foliage dies back but it comes back from the roots. It would not make it through your winters CE.

CE your sister and you both have nice ponds, and it is nice that the two of you enjoy the same hobby together! Does she live far from you? How will she take care of her ponds now that she is injured? Hope she gets back on her feet soon!

She is in AZ, Colleen, and I live in IL. She will be moving to Wisconsin as soon as they sell their AZ house. She is a realtor. Husband's job got eliminated here in AZ, but he was able to switch to a different division of the same parent company, but they have to move back to WI. Her pond is pretty much self sufficient, only needs care once a week or so. I already know how to change the floating skimmer basket, and if the pump (Oase brand) needs to be flushed, I can do that as well. I also am taking care of the pool, netting leaves and so forth. Saved a couple of bees and a grass hopper this morning. LOL
Thanks, Addy and JW! She confirmed both of you are absolutely correct on your flower identifications. And, if the blue star one was even available as an annual, I would purchase it! Maybe if it was mulched in, it would survive the winter. And, last year, we got down to single digits for a day or two, but that was it. Usually if we get below zero, it's very short lived. I suspect the zone chart says it would not survive. However, couple of weekends ago, at the garden center mini seminars, they said to push the zone limits, and see if the plants will survive. So many things are factors, and the zones are safe. If you have something holding back the wind (wall or fence), or extra sun in an area, etc. you can push into the next zone easily. I don't have much to stop the wind, but the house, so things that can go with morning sun, usually can be pushed to the next colder zone for me, I've found.

You can always try it CE and like I said it may come back from the roots even if the whole thing turns this yucky black. You just trim it back in early Spring and wait for the new to come up. It's done that here a few times now. This year was mild tho so no black. Usually it is easy to find at Lowes or H-depot here for cheap.

My visit to AZ to help my sister after her surgery was just as I had expected ... and WORSE! She has always been the demanding, bossy type, but this past week was 100 times worse than I ever thought she could possibly be. I've never been given so many conflicting commands on how to drive! You would think I was just learning how. She literally gave "STOP ... GO" in the exact same situation, same as "faster ... slower". I never knew what her whim would be for the moment. LOL But I survived ... never will offer to help her again, though. Not worth the stress. If she had to go to a nursing home next time, I would feel the need to send my sympathy for whoever had to take care of her. LOL
Anyhow, there were some nice times. I truly enjoyed the 5 hours I spent with my mom and Gene. What a nice reprieve in the middle of the week. They live in a lovely condo, and they gave me the grand tour. It was like living in a 4 or 5 star hotel! Wow, simply amazing.

This is a 4' Giant Calla Lily at my sister's house. I've never seen such a huge calla.

And, on the way to the airport to pick up her husband, she insisted we stop at the Japanese Gardens ... even though there were plumbing problems at her house that a.m., so we were about 45 minutes later leaving than we had wanted. Literally had 15 minutes to spend, and she paid $10 for us to get in, for goodness sake!!! Check out the green water, but what a grand waterfall. Koi were nice, but nothing spectacular, IMO.

This mallard hen had 10 ducklings. The lady said they were 3 weeks old. So cute!

Lol, sorry about your horrible visit w/ your sister...........don't mean to laugh but it sounded rather humorous to me, course I didn't have to be there.........lol again :biggrinangelA:
Glad you had some nice times too w/ your mom and Gene. They sound like they revived your feelings toward humans again. They sound like very nice people and know how to show you around the town and a good time. Sounds like you needed the break from your nursing career. Neat pics of the plants and falls in that pond and oh the cute little duckies

Yes CE, you made me laugh! Glad to see I am not alone with "extra lovely" sisters!! Ha ha ha! My sister and I are in the "outs" again! She is always demanding, screaming, cranky, mad, crying or something!! She is sick with an eating problem and if you ask me its because of her bad nerves! At least I know she will get over it and in a couple weeks, maybe months, she will just call out of the blue and pretend like nothing happened!! Well we can't pick and choose our family so I guess I will just have to "pretend back"! Ha ha ha :)

Oh so they must live indoors in the winter where you are Cape? I have some that I got from a friends yard many yrs ago and they have never bloomed. Am wondering if it's cuz they might be planted too deep? They get foliage but no blooms.

I know nothing about Calla Lilies ... other than last fall I was trying to look up what was hardy here, and the links I read said they weren't, so hubby brought it in. I thought it would stay like it was when it bloomed in Oct, maybe get wider, but did NOT expect it to grow like it has in the basement. Looks to me like it is going to need to be staked when it goes back outside ...

Prolly growing tall and lanky like that cuz it's indoors. Mine don't get very tall at all but when my neighbor had them they were tall and thick stemmed w/ lots of beautiful blooms and did not need staking. Course they stayed outside all year and in winter die down to the ground and regrow in Spring. Dog gone it I wish I knew why mine don't bloom!

Weak from natural wind and stretching to the basement window is definately because of being inside, but it was only a foot tall last year, and now is a conservative three feet. Plants only stretch so much. How deep do you have yours? At first hubby had the top of the pot sticking out of the water, but then moved it, and had about an inch of water over the pot ... Even with hardening this one off to the outside world, I am thinking a tomato cage may be needed for it this year???

Wow, Cape, that's a huge one for sure. I figured what my sister had in AZ was a tropical variety, but maybe not! I tried to grow callas from bulbs last spring, got nothing. Maybe should have tried to start them in the ground. Might have had to do with the fact that I goofed and used "scoopable" clay litter, too!!! Oops! Anyhow, none of them sprouted. I have caladiums in pots in my south windows, 2 of them have finally sprouted. I heard they take a long time. I hope they all sprout, as I got 3 different colors and if they grow, I'll bring them in for the winter and restart them next spring, or maybe keep them under lights.
Colleen, this sister (I have 3 altogether) has ALWAYS been demanding, and wanting to control everyone and everything. I knew what I was in for, just didn't know to that degree. I survived, that's all that matters. Cape, she is in the process of selling their home in AZ and moving back to WI, so will be back to driving distance from me ... 6 hours. At least at my house, my rules go and she is not allowed to change them. LOL I always keep the peace, that's why I was so frustrated last week. I wanted to yell back and tell her where to go ... but didn't want bad feelings, and didn't want to threaten to leave, as I had no intention of paying extra to leave early. So, I stuck it out. We all have people we know that are like this, I just have one that is my sister. I have my baby sister that I would do anything for gladly, but she is like me, she would ask for nothing, and be ever thankful for any little thing I did for her. Total opposite from AZ sister. Third sister is in between, not as bad as AZ sister, not nearly as nice as baby sister. :)
