What is currently the main pond will someday be my comet/shubunkin/goldfish pond. This pond was never part of the landscape plan. It was more or less something slapped together since he hadnt had a pond for awhile (he would get depressed installing/taking care of ponds for others, when he didnt have one anymore, that's how we ended up with the QT in the basement - a giant fish tank) ... Wrapping the corner of the house was "out of the way". He dug it the way I wanted it, which meant no room for lilies, too deep and no shelves ... so then he added the bog for plants, left a deep end with calm water for his lilies (that's why the filter is so close to the main pond, instead of at the other end of the bog for better circulation), with the intent of eventually making it all bog ... So now he wants to get going on buying gravel for the bog .. which will mean the lilies lose their home.

The original sketches of the backyard include half a dozen or so "plant ponds" with 8 x 10 liners, seperated by walking paths. The backyard is pretty barren of life. After we built the house, we only backfilled the foundation, and that;s how it sat til last year. Here;s with nothing done.

Took this picture about 3 weeks ago ... Nothing exact about the garden hose ... First, if you look on top of the dirt pile (around the main pond), you'll see a square rock ... that;s where I normally hang out with the fish ... that area needs more fill, to make it big enough to place 2 chairs or a wooden 2 person swing there (and a tree, probably a coral bark maple) ... the hill needs boulders to properly retain the hill side ...

Where you see the extra liner/landscape fabric hanging next to the boulders (holding up the patio) is where the 150 gallon skippy type filter is being buried ... waterfall there ... the hose/outline for a pond needs to be pulled back away from that area, enough to add a small river, so we can have a walking path/planting area next to the existing boulders, and put a small bridge there, to get to the other side of the new pond, without having to walk around (which will lead to rock steps up to the main pond ...

I dont know how big this next pond will end up ... wont be fancy, just a rectangle out of a 20 x 25 liner ... the biggest question is on the depth. Everything he has built has been a minimum of 3' with most being 4-5' deep ... he does take care of smaller/more shallow ponds, and fish seem to do fine. The main purpose is for lilies, but I am going to grow out several of the babies I got from ebay there (while small enough not to cause harm to his lilies) ... Have a week or so to figure it out, the stock tanks are not in yet, and have some prep work to do first....

Love her dirt! Wish ours looked like that.
If you mean all the dirt from the original pond, that is all fill ... we live on a sandbar. Nothing but weeds grow in it. Guessing you have clay?

Now I am jealous of your DIRT ... I would be thrilled to see all that rock. We have to BUY rocks. The best deal we can get for rock is at $50 per ton, and he takes HIS truck and machine into the back area to get what he wants .. and we only get that deal because we do so much business with the company ... normally, rocks are only available by the pallet at $250-400 per pallet (pallet weights vary but average 3000 lbs). depending on rock type or color.

The rock we get here is just shale most times and guessing Addy gets a lot of it too ,I think she said so in the past .I hate stairs thats why i wanted a ranch home when I retired .The only stairs are on the front porch and side porch .Decks out back have one step down but had to add to it because pee wee could not get back up and was scared to get down when he was a baby .

Well it is mush rock, turns to dirt in about a year. Would love it if it stayed as rock. Exposure to the elements breaks it down real quick. A kind of shale layers and layers, but worthless as rock

I get that and alot of quartz. The one pi is rocks that are 4 ft. deep and that is where my underfround water collection tank is
I would be very happy with those rocks ... our native rocks are whites and grays for the most part, once in awhile some tans. Would love to have some browns mixed in. We can buy rocks that look like those, but they are really pricey ... around $400 per pallet.

All the rocks are from this property and I know this was once a cow pasture over 50 years ago and the allowed to just grow wild and I came to the conclusion that cow pies turn into rocks .I still pick up a bucket or 2 a week .Sometimes not small ones .I could make kitchen counter tops .
