Will it work under a waterfall or does it have to be a tube of water placed perfectly hitting it on the side?

Where is CatNutFish when we need him!!! He sounds pretty smart like you too Mitch, and can investigate what causes my ball to spin too! he he he

The ball spins because there is slightly more resistance going in one direction than the other.
I came across a good reference for that last night but can't find it now.
And you can credit google for making me look smart, lol.
I just knew that there was a good explanation for what is happening.

Basically, the water surrounding the spinning ball keeps the ball in the middle of the water stream.

JW if the water comes out in a nice drop it should work. You can adust rocks in the water fall to push water in direction needed. Tomorrow I will shoot a video of the small ball spinning in the bottom pond where the water drops from the middle pond so you can see....

Mitch how is your glacier on the pond doing? On a warm day if your add water to the pond and raise the wster to the level of the ice, and get a pump going, it should melt twice as fast then.

Last time I checked there was 10 inches of ice still.
There's no way to get a pump in there for a while.
When I drill test holes, water comes flowing up right away so the water is right there.

Guess I could do a test w/ another type ball I have. Put under waterfall and see. Any ball will work if placed right I would think.

I imagine it would work with another ball too. I can't believe they are so much money now. I got mine a few years ago at the local pet store, he had all sizes, I think I paid about 25 dollars back then. I am going to look online and see if they are cheaper, cause the metal ones are nice. Glass balls might break in winter.
Mitch I hear there is a heat wave comming soon, and the big chunk of ice will melt soon! :)

I was also out and about late last night, into the wee hours of the morning, playing in my giant outdoor playhouse, by the pond. It is like I sit outside in the comfort of the warm steamy greenhouse, listening to the sounds of the neighborhood. There was an owl hooting, people calling their puppies two doors down, and last night a big black dog from down the street was standing by the back fence, wanting to play with Bear!
Life is what you make of it, so make it a good one!

Neat night time fun in the play house. I should fix mine up sometime w/ some plants even if they are hardy ones that can take some cold. As it is now it sits empty all winter.

I threw a ball under the waterfall and it would not stay there very long. The falls come straight down in sheet of water so think it need to be a spout type of water coming at an angle to make it work right.

Yes JW, the flow has to be just right for a ball to spin. The ball also has to be hard to spin, not soft. Need to unwind and have glass of wine in my greenhouse tonight. I had to work hard today at work, so it is nice to relax in my greenhouse and play with my fairy garden. It will be nice when it is hotter in May, then I will get my fairy display set up by the pond. JW you really should take advantage of your greenhouse if you are able to, it is good therapy for the mind, body and soal. There is something great about playing with the earth and planting little seeds. It is nice way to get outside and soak up some sun without any cold wind or rain.

I think people have been relaxing in the garden with a drink in hand for a long time, it just feels good, and feels natural. All winter long I dream of getting my bug free patio back up by the pond and relaxing with a glass of wine, but in the colder months the greenhouse fill the need to play in the dirt and moves the rocks around! I only have one or two drinks and then it is off to bed, wine can make me sleepy too, and nothing wrong with a good nights rest! :)
