I have some rustic metal art out front that is supposed to look that way, and it still looks great too. I was worried that the paint might fade on my new art, but it is metal and I could paint it later down the road if need be. I am trying to stay away from plastic stuff cause I seem to bust them over the summer. The long fancy plastic solar stakes seem to get busted up too.

We bought some metal dragonflies a number of years ago that had painted wings with some kind of a clear coat.
The clear coat is fine but the coloured paint underneath is very faded.

I think you can get metal paint in small tubs and repaint it Mitch, that way it will look good again. Me and my mother go esch year to the garden show, cause hubby is usually not into the garden stuff and it is something special I can do with my mother. My mother used to garden like crazy in her younger days, I still remember well just how lovely her garden was!

Always enjoy looking at your garden art Colleen and seeing the new stuff you add. My mother too was also a very good gardener and think that is one thing that rubbed off just a little bit on me. I have nothing like she did tho. She had flowers blooming everywhere. I'm more of the evergreen type low maintenance type of gardener w/ not very many flowers to take care of :alien:

Oh forgot to tell ya, my yellow flag is wandering off reaching out into my pond now from the edges. Maybe someday I will have some bunches of floating islands like you have. I better keep control tho cuz only one island bunch would be good to have. Too many would take over my pond.

Now is a good time to increase the pond flow, as the sun is getting stronger and algae and poor water quality can be a problem after a long hard winter. I plugged in the other pump I have in the top pond on the far side, and that will break up and filter the algae better too, I also placed the large metal ball to spring in the main hose, that flows all winter. I also lifted the hose as well to accommodate the spinning metal ball, which will help greatly to loosen algae and break up the surface of the water.

Hey Colleen where did you get your big stainless ball and how big is it? And it just stays where ever there is a spout of water coming out? Ok you just answered this question while I was typing...........centrifugal force, thanks.
Also someone asked on another thread if you could just connect one of those pre-filters we have right to the pump intake hole w/o any tubing?

Hey your phone is ringing :D

The filter will allow for several different sized hose fittings, but there needs to be a "female and male" type of connection. This could prove difficult otherwise.

The big spinning ball is stainless steel, I got it at one of the pet stores here in town. I have three different sizes of stainless Steel balls. I think they are also sold thru Laguna or one of the other pond shops online. I may be cheaper to order them on line as well, They are meant to be "floating gazing balls" for the pond, if memory serves me correct. I have had these balls in the pond for many years. The funny thing is I never hardly take them out of the pond ever, not even in winter, and they have no "hard water spots" considering the city water is very very hard and everything in my house gets hard water spots, except in the pond. I think it is because that really big yellow flag that is over 23 years old, sucks all the heavy metals out of the ponds, and maybe that is way my pumps last so long too.... In winter I do not have them spin if really cold.

The spinning ball is a great way to get more circulation and break up the surface of the water better. Bigger fish need much more water movement to ensure good oxygen flow in water in summer months. The ball is simply placed there the hose spits into the pond. You will have to adjust the hose to a down ward position. I think is a great way to get more water movement without adding another pump, Waterfalls that are very wide, lose lots of water pressure and sometimes do not create enough water movement. If you have another pump, and a hose, you could hide part of the hose in wood or flowers, and get a spinning ball to spin in another area of pond to create more water movement.

They have a 12" S.S floating ball at Wal-mart for $50. Man those things are expensive! Yours is not that big is it Colleen?

The one that I have is pretty big, maybe 12 inches, but I got mine like 9 years or more ago and it was cheaper back then. Look and see if they have them cheaper online JW. The bigger the ball, and the faster the flow, the greater the push of water will be. On the bright side, they do seem to last forever!

Mitch, you can get a ball and experiment with it in your pond this summer, and research the matter, then Please let us girls know exactly why the ball spins!

CENTRIFUGAL FORCE

An object traveling in a circle behaves as if it is experiencing an outward force. This force, known as the centrifugal force, depends on the mass of the object, the speed of rotation, and the distance from the center. The more massive the object, the greater the force; the greater the speed of the object, the greater the force; and the greater the distance from the center, the greater the force.

I don't know if that is the same, cause the Coanda effect pushes the ball away, while gravity pushes it back into place, and the ball does not have to spin for that effect'

The Centrifugal Force effect causes the ball in my pond spin in a circle, and the bigger the ball, the greater the force, and it does seem to be "An object traveling in a circle behaves as if it is experiencing an outward force".

But what do I know, I never even took physic's and failed math horribly in school I confess!

I should just call it The Colleen Effect! Just Gaze into my Ball..... Ha Ha Ha!!!
