Wow, they've really grown !!! Interesting how the koi really stand out from the other pond fish, due to their size and markings.

I'll repeat what Tula said - Wow they've really grown! It will be interesting to see what they will do in another year. Yours are as big as mine and mine are 10 and 13 years old. Thank goodness mine didn't grow as much as yours. I would need a bigger pond.

You have some big beauties!
Thanks JW. I'm happy with most of the Koi. A few of them the judgement is still out but overall I like them a lot. Most of my fish are still goldfish. The oldest one I got in 2008. I remember when i first got them I had a bad case of high ammonia. We had some hot weather in March and I started feeding them and there was no bb in the pond to break down the ammonia. I lost all my fish except that one and I remember thinking he was so sad. He is still doing well 11 years later and has lot of new playmates!
 Big, good looking fish!!
Thank you. They were all purchased for $100 or less as 5-6" Koi. All my Koi were imported from Japan. They have some of the best examples of Koi.

Thanks. I do feed them a lot.... On the average 3 times a day.

Thank you. Five of the fish were 5-6 inches when I got them in May so they have almost doubled in length is a little over 4 months. I don't feed them too much at anyone time but today they ate ton. My 17 month old grandson came over and we let him fed them. Most of the food ended up on the rocks outside the pond because he had a hard time throwing the food far enough to go in the water!

That right there is the reason we tell people their 300 gallon pond is never gonna be big enough for those "small" koi!

They look great @CometKeith ! When we know our grandkids are coming, the fish get a few days without food ahead of time - they love to feed the fish and catch the frogs. Our little dog follows behind them and gobbles up all the pellets that don't make it to the pond.

I see in the future a BIGGER pond! Your fish are looking good!
Thanks Addy. I'm not sure I need to go bigger but may get more pond equipment down the road. So I guess the whole summer i spent cleaning my filter and vacuuming the pond were not wasted. The water is "finally" getting clearer to where you can see the fish. Amazingly I am still vacuuming up a lot of sand. We did our pavers last year and it looks like more sand went into the pond then I ever thought!

Lisa, That's funny. My daughter decided to teach him some sign language words to go along with his normal vocabulary so he kept signing the word "more" by putting his tiny hands together so we would keep giving the fish food. I'm attaching a few more pics that I took today. This is the clearest the water has been since I got my new pump/filter setup.

What most newbies don't understand is between different in weight and waste from different length fish. A typical 5" Koi weighs 1.21 ounces and contributes 3.43 MG ammonia and 11.3 grams of waste in 24 hours. Then compare a 10" Koi... double the numbers right? Absolutely not! It can weigh 9.70 ounces and contribute 27.48 MG ammonia and 90.7 grams of waste in 24 hours!! So double the size fish but almost 10x the amount of weight and waste associated with the larger fish! I'm including this chart that I found that compares different size fish. https://russellwatergardens.com/pages/koi-length-and-weight

I've heard the RDF to a shower filter is the gold standard these days.....but pricey !
I think Gemma has one. It’s something I may look into but not quite sure how I can hide it. Still enjoying summer here! 80’s yesterday and today is another nice day but I heard colder weather is coming this way! Took these pictures this morning.

Must be nice, we are freezing our butts off here but we still have sunshine!

So I didn't know what an RDF was so I googled it and whoa what a monster it is! I see what you mean about where to put it. You would have to knock a whole through your house and do away w/whatever room that is on the other side, lol! Maybe just put it on the other side of the fence in the neighbors yard :D
This guy makes his own and is trying to make it even better eventually:

Seaside Aquatics is well respected for fair prices and a Red Label RDF is seen as reliable.

I have to do something :( Even with the new media in the sand & gravel filter, we can see it's not enough filtration. My budget will allow for a small bog or pressurized filter in addition to the sand & gravel filter.

Now that I look up rotary drum I don’t think I have ever seen one on any of the pond tours I have gone on. Usually they just have one or two large bead filters. I took a few more pics today. My wife can’t believe how many fish we have. The water has not really been clear until the last few weeks so you couldn’t see them before. I told her I haven’t gotten any new ones since the beginning of May which is actually
true!

Gosh you must have 50 - 75 fish in there! I'm looking about the same in my pond but I don't have koi. I know I have too many tho.
