Gosh you must have 50 - 75 fish in there! I'm looking about the same in my pond but I don't have koi. I know I have too many tho.

JW. yes it's a lot, plus there are a lot of babies and goldfish that are mostly black that you can't see. In this picture there are at least another 30 more you can't see. I gave up trying to count them. I used to be able to count them by group like all the sarasa goldfish, shubunkins, etc and add them all up. I can't even do that now. All I know is 7 Koi and a lot of goldfish!

I count mine the same way @CometKeith - "we have X number of goldfish, then there's the fantails, then the shubunkins... " and then someone moves and I have to start counting all over again!
Mine are always moving, no clue how I would count them, maybe a picture when most are gathered. I don't even try

Gemma thank you. It looks like a Shiro Utsuri to me. The suma is a rich black color against a shiny bright white background. Only it’s head is missing black spots. The funny thing is when I bought these tosais they were supposed to be either Sanke or Showa except for the one Gin Rin Matsuba I ordered. This fish originally had some orange on it but it all went away pretty quickly. I really like it’s coloration a lot now so I’m happy the way things turned out. It is a ferocious eater and I’m thinking it may be a jumbo Tosai because it will eat almost half of all the food when I feed the fish! Is your black and white also a Shiro Utsuri? I never heard of them starting out orange and black as tosai and losing the orange. Well you never know what to expect when you buy them as juveniles, but so far I’m very happy with this fish! I took some more pictures today. I guess I’m making up for not taking any pictures all summer because the water was so cloudy. You can see the Shiro Utsuri pretty prominently in the photos because he is saving a good spot to eat when I throw in their food. Btw. I switched to fall diet now as the pond temperature is going down now.

And who knows how many hybrids!
Addy. I’m hoping no hybrids but if there are a few it won’t affect anything because I not raising fish to resell. I did some research about hybrids and most people said it’s pretty unusual to get them. Also I heard the goldfish will eat the baby Koi so maybe they will eat the hybrids too. When I moved the pond I found some pretty ugly greenish brown fish by the bottom and I had no idea they were there. Naturally I kept them and relocated them to the new pond because I didn’t have the heart to get rid of them because they were ugly! I guess I can never be a Koi breeder!

I see the greenish brown fish in my pond. I think they are goldfish without the gold. But I am seeing them growing beautiful fins, some are turning a great gold brown. I even have some now converting to the bright orange of gold fish.

Mine was a Sanke!
Technically she still is, cause she still has some red (Beni, Hi, not sure what you call it) patches on both sides, but they're feinted and I expect them to disappear within the next 2 years or so.
I though when a Sanke loses the red, it turns into a Shiro Bekko and when a Hi (or Ki) Utsuri lose their HI (and KI) they turn into Shiro Utsuri.
In other words I thought Shiro Utsuri have bands of Sumi that can extend over the head and the Shiro Bekko Sumi is more spots and does not extend over the head....if this is how they are distinct from one another, I definitely have a Shiro Bekko
The Showa also have bands of Sumi (am I right?) so it probably also turns into a Shiro Utsuri if it loses its HI

Wow @CometKeith , that Shiro Utsuri is huge !! I thought maybe it was a showa, but I am not up on very many of the types of koi. Honestly, looks like it must have been a jumbo tosai !!!!!

Many years back, I had koi, comets and shubunkins. I have no idea who fertilized what eggs....all I know is I had a whole lotta fish. I had dark olive colored fish with long flowy fins. I gave one to a neighbor who kept it in an aquarium for many years, it never changed color and grew fairly large.

Gemma you are totally right. Possibly because it had some orange on it the seller must of thought it was a Sanke or maybe they knew what they were sending because they added an extra Koi because of shipping problems and just never told me they were including a Shiro Bekko. Either way I still like it a lot. I saw this article that explains the difference between the Shiro Bekko and Shiro Utsuri https://www.kloubeckoi.com/blog/fiv...nce-between-shiro-bekko-and-shiro-utsuri-koi/

Tula It's mouth is huge so you just know it's going to grow big. For some reason certain fish have smaller or larger mouths than others and you can almost predict which ones are going to be small or large that way. I once saw an older pond and all the goldfish were greenish brown because they reverted to their dominant color. I definitely did not like it. I prefer brighter colors.

So true. Today I was watching all the pretty baby sarasas in my pond. There must be about a half dozen with really pretty colors all around 1.5-2 inches! They have only been brave enough to swim with the big fish the last week or so and go where I throw the food. Before they they stayed mostly where I had a lot of pond plants.
Addy. I have had so many black goldfish turn orange over time it's crazy. I can't remember ever having a baby solid orange goldfish and now there are like 30 or more adult orange goldfish in my pond and some have beautiful tails. With my old pond I would see certain fish turning from black to orange slowly day by day. It seemed to happen mostly in the summer. Now my pond is too big to keep track of them all!
I took this picture in the rain today. You can see all the orange ones.

We saw two babies in the pond a few weeks ago - one was clearly a sarassa, the other was black so I figured he/she would turn orange. The other day we suddenly have two orange and white babies... so now we're wondering did the black turn orange AND white? The mystery was solved a few minutes later when the black fish showed up. Apparently there are THREE babies this year. We just finally spotted the two sarassas at the same time!

Of course, where there are three there could be 30... we won't know for sure until next year. We added a small herd of shubunkins this year (after the parasites killed off about 20 of our goldfish) so we're hoping the fry start leaning more shubby for some variety in a few years.
