Hi Tula. I run a few pumps just for water circulation and once or twice a year I have to remove from one of the pumps a snail that clogged the inlet.
Hubby bought all new granite chicken grit today. He wrote the man who designed this filter with a question regarding rock size. We're thinking of emptying it, checking it and refilling it with fresh media when we do the "great koi round up". I've never removed the 4 adults from the pond, or at least not since the current pond was built. I've been seeking information on how to house them safely in my 110 gallon stock tank for a few hours while we do this...but it makes me nervous !

Hubby has been reading up on bogs and I think we're close to doing it....just hope it's this season. I'll feel better with both the sad & gravel filter and a small bog for filtration......kind of like "belt and suspenders".

Tula. That sounds nice. Good luck with it! I took a few pics today around feeding time. Slowly the pond water is getting clearer.

Wow, beautiful herd ! I'm glad to hear the pond is clearing for you, give it time. You're heading into a slow time of year, so can take some time to think about filtration over the winter :)

The Great Koi Round Up of 2019 is underway and hubby is emptying the ugly barrel of media that is the sand & gravel filter:spitoutdummy:

Hmm..... There must be 10 or 20 babies in the pond. That's funny because I did not see a single fry all summer long. I know there is at least one small green frog too... yay!
Looks very nice and clear @CometKeith
Sorry to hear your new filter isn't doing it for ya.
Thanks jw. It's slowly doing better. I found I need to clean it at least twice a week. It's more work than I expected!

Thanks Tula. I actually had a long talk with my wife the other day about filtration. She didn't know exactly how much I spent this year and I told her and mentioned if I had spent double things would be a lot better now. She didn't seem to upset by any of it which is good.
Good luck with the roundup. What are you going to do with all of them? Trade them for supplies at pet stores?

I saw the crazy fish chasing yesterday. Don't they know winter is coming!

Yeah about the green frog! Maybe there is another hanging out somewhere.

Good news on filtration conversation with wife :)

No local pet stores in our area will take in fish :( Years ago I had a nice family owned place that loved taking them, but they were bought out by Petco and they won't take fish.

I've actually heard from a fellow GPF member @Nevermore44 , that he may be interested in seeing them. If not, I'll take them to a nice nursery that lets me release them in their big outdoor pond. Currently they're in my plant filled deck pond, which is small, so I want to get them to a new home soon.

I was nervous over night about my 4 adult, but all looks good this morning !

Pond is looking good! I have not been on the forum much this summer. Your pond has really come along since I last seen it. :)

I'm happy about the green frog. i did buy a bullfrog tadpole a few months ago, but I think it is too early for it to become a frog. My fish have no idea winter is coming either. The pond water is still pretty warm and they are eating like crazy.

The pond is starting to get clearer. i didn't really need to clean my filter today but did it anyway. I can finally see the fish! Yay!
Good luck with your roundup. I'm glad your "adults" are doing well. Are they still growing?

Thanks haver for the compliment. Last year I added two Koi. I added 5 more this year. I'm not looking to buy any more Koi now. It was way more work getting a larger pump/filter and maintaining it than I anticipated! To top it off it looks like their are a lot of goldfish babys in the pond this year too!

@CometKeith , yes the a couple of the adults are still growing. Cha Cha I expect to grow as she's younger, but Madame Butterfly, bulked up this summer, which surprised me.

How bid are your koi now @CometKeith ?
Haha. Thanks for asking! The largest Koi as of now is my Shiro Utsuri. It has a beautiful black pattern on a white background. It is 10-11 inches and is quite wide which makes me think this one will get quite large. The funny thing is when I ordered my fish I didn’t ask for a Shiro Utsuri. Originally it also had orange spots which went away and was probably confused as a Sanke or Showa. Anyway it’s really pretty and I’m glad I have it. I have 3 others in the 9-10” range including the 2 Sankes I bought last year. The other 3 are 7-9 inches. Are the Koi are doing excellent and my goldfish look happy too.

So here is the picture of the Shiro Utsuri front and center of all the activity as usual! It is the white one with the black dots. To the left of it I think is a Showa. A little behind the Showa is with the red spot on his head is one of the Sankes from last year.
