We saw two babies in the pond a few weeks ago - one was clearly a sarassa, the other was black so I figured he/she would turn orange. The other day we suddenly have two orange and white babies... so now we're wondering did the black turn orange AND white? The mystery was solved a few minutes later when the black fish showed up. Apparently there are THREE babies this year. We just finally spotted the two sarassas at the same time!

Of course, where there are three there could be 30... we won't know for sure until next year. We added a small herd of shubunkins this year (after the parasites killed off about 20 of our goldfish) so we're hoping the fry start leaning more shubby for some variety in a few years.
So far I have not spotted a baby in the pond since I lowered the water and caught all the babies, which pleases me. Usually I always miss one !
Yay for the baby fish! Tula I hope yours find a good home. Last week I took off the prefilter on the pipe that brings water to my external pump instead of just cleaning it like I usually do. A few months ago I installed it to keep baby fish from being sucked up but I was seeing the water flow was diminished from the filter because of it. I can’t really clean the prefilter because the water is getting to cold so I just took it out. Hopefully it doesn’t suck up any babies, but I think overall it’s a better decision for the pond because the water flow from my filter is much better.

Totally lucked out this year and placed all the babies in a friend's pond :) Right now we're working on building a small bog for supplemental filtration.

Hi Tula. Actually I'm thinking of making a small bog too. I have several areas with a lot of plants and I'm thinking i could make the larger of the two into a bog. Do you have any pictures of the bog you are building? It might be tricky for me because its currently part of my pond so I would have to figure out how to separate it.

I started a thread titled " Tula's BBB ( Baby Bog Build )" just the other day, take a look :)

Read through this article by Nelson's Water Garden on building a bog within your pond, using a porous material for its walls.

I haven't been on in a while... pond and fish are doing well. I did mess up my filter pump but figured out why. I took off the check valve by accident when I tool off my pre-filter. Didn't know why all those extra tubes were in the water! In the spring I'll fix it. Planning a trip to Japan next month with my family. Not sure if I can go Koi shopping! lol They know I'm super interested but don't know if we will have time to go to a Koi farm :(

Sorry you did a boo boo on your pump but good to know you can fix it.

My friends are in Japan right now on a group trip. They won't be koi shopping like you tho. Bet you will have a great time there and I hear it's beautiful!

Glad you had a nice trip and good you got out of there before all this awful virus stuff hit. Sunshine is lifting my spirits here for the last several days but sure is chilly in the mornings. One thing here I like about our pretty much no ice weather is I get to see my fish every day of the year!
