Well. It's 1 degree below F today and getting even colder this coming week! Not much going on with my pond, but I still have running a water pump, aerator, and breather. There is still a hole in the ice where the aerator is bubbling up. I think the breather helps that by slightly warming the pond water because of it's electric heating element. Last year without the breather the pond was totally frozen over when it was even warmer than today.

We are expecting -25 to -30 temps with wind chill nearing -60. I am grateful for the heavy snow cover as it provides protection for the landscape as well - all those plants tucked in under the snow have no idea how cold it is "up above"!
It's crazy how cold it got last night and it's going down to 27 below tonight!! I hope my fish are okay...
Officially it a state of emergency in Illinois per the governor.

Use a real heater for the next couple days and your fish will fair much better...
Colleen. The problem is people here don't have the proper cold weather clothing to be outside at these temperatures so I can't really do anything with my pond. When I was in college in Wisconsin years ago people had all sorts of fur lined hats, gloves, and boots. Now having that is almost unheard of because of all the mild winters we have had the last 20 years or so .It was 21 degrees below zero this morning when I went to work and it was still the same temperature at 9:00 am. It got up to a balmy -4 degrees F this afternoon!

This is the first winter in years that I have put my cold weather coat on and it was almost not good enough for the temperatures mixed with the howling wind. We were no where as cold as you guys I can not even imagine that type of cold.
The coldest I have ever been in was -17 back when I was in college in AZ

I would just set a 1500 watt cattle heater and that will burn a hole in the ice. Trouble with the extreme cold is the pond will freeze very hard and there will be little space left under the ice for fish. I wish you lots of luck!
