okay. I have been back now a few weeks from our Asia trip. Finally got used to the Chicago weather after 37 degrees centigrade in Cambodia and a 50 F drop when we came back. Mini report on my fish and pond. All the perennials are growing in nicely including sedges and irises. The fish all got through the winter great. I lost only one small goldfish over the winter despite temps tht hit almost 28 degrees below F and wind chills to minus 62 degrees. We even heard the ground cracking on the coldest days! Well I cleaned up the pond a little last week and installed my biofilter. I had three water moving devices running all winter including a water pump, a mini koi air pump and a pond breather and that seemed to work out very well. I was going to upgrade my filtration to a bead filter this spring and had everything picked out but ending up spending my money on dentistry and car repairs so I am putting that purchase off for now. I did order....... oh no! Addy you are going to be so dissapointed in me... 5 (FIVE) tosai Koi from Kodama Koi. 5-7 inch fish. 3 Showas, 1 Sanke and 1 Doitsu Gin Matsuba. By getting the fifth the shipping was free! They are coming tomorrow so i will report on them when they show up!

Can't wait to see pictures!

Thanks Tula. I'm still waiting on them. It's a special program called study tosai so they have some leeway when they get shipped. Also you can't pick out the exact fish you want either. I think they are coming or being shipped tomorrow but not really sure. This is the link. https://www.kodamakoifarm.com/shop/live-koi/study-tategoi/
Never.......... you love koi I love my shubbies. No desire to have koi

Thanks Addy. For me it will be better if the Koi work out well. My primary viewing point is from the second floor deck of our building because we are living on the 2nd and third floors and the Koi will be easier to see because they are larger.
Can't wait to see your new fish, I love Showa! I'm curious to see if yours keep the red
Thanks Gemma. I'm not sure how red they will be. I have two Sankes right now that are orange spotted and they are nice. I think the red ones are a lot more expensive. Also it's random what I'm getting so I have no idea what they will actually look like! i'm hoping not too much black. I really like the sanke and showas with a lot of white with good patterns all over but those are a lot more expensive. The most expensive of this group were only $99. The 5 cost me $450 with shipping.
Nice to hear winter went well for fish. Exciting Koi news and can't wait to see those fancy Koi!
Thanks Colleen. Haha. I spent all winter looking at fish on different web sites. It's very difficult to find high quality small Tosai Koi so i'm looking forward to these. As they grow I'll be upgrading my filtration so I'm okay with getting small ones right now. I think most people want a big "splash" so to speak and want to get larger Koi to show off but i'm fine with getting better quality smaller ones.

What a neat program ! Do you get to select the breeder, or everything preselected for you? I know Kodama had some confirmed cases of KHV, so they have strict health protocols in place now, which is a good thing.

I'm still waiting on my fish!
Hi Tula. From what I understand these are from some of the top breeders in the business. This is some more info on the program. From what I understand the fish are from top breeders and lineage from show winning fish but the fish you get are randomly selected. See info from their website:
Ten years ago, we asked ourselves, “How can we offer famous bloodline Koi to our customers for an affordable price?” And that's how the “Study Tategoi program” started. It is now the best opportunity to get a koi with a lot of potential for your pond.
This year's Tategoi is bigger than even last year!
  • 1,000 Tategoi Tosai
  • 12 famous breeders
  • 15 different varieties
Whose koi and which variety would you like to raise this year?
This unique opportunity to buy famous breeders' tategoi (future koi) with minimal investment is not always available.
Just like wines, which have so many varieties and wineries, unless you taste it, you wouldn't know which one is your favorite. Buying Study Tategoi, is like selecting your favorite koi from many different varieties and breeders. Unless you actually raise them yourself, you have no idea which bloodline will turn out the best in your pond. You'll just have to try many and see!

.... finally heard. The fish are being shipped Monday for Tuesday delivery. I'm having a fence built next to the pond. The carpenter working on it dropped his phone in the pond. It looks like it will be there for a while! This how it looked the other day when they were just started.

Looks so nice and that fence will give you a lot of privacy! Sorry about the guys phone. How come he didn't fish it out w/a net and put it in a bag of rice or?

Haha. Actually I left work to try to help him find it and got the net out from storage, but the bottom of the pond was too mucky to find it. I guess I need to get a pond vacuum. Re: fence.. it will match the other side.... Definitely it will add privacy and security.
