I think the warm weather will help slow the spread IF they allow people to get out of their houses and into the fresh air and sunshine. Chasing people off the beaches and out of the parks isn't helping that effort. They all act like a virus is something we've never dealt with before.

Whatever works for you! So those are ultra-violet lights? Be careful.

UV light is nature’s disinfectant, but can it kill coronavirus?

As society hunkers down in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19, commonly known as the coronavirus, people are taking stringent precautions to keep themselves from catching the disease, including self-quarantining and disinfecting commonly touched surfaces. As such, hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, and other disinfectants are currently in short supply.

With man-made sanitizers in limited supply, many are turning to nature’s disinfectant: ultraviolet light. UV irradiation has long been used to sterilize objects and rooms, so it makes sense to wonder: Can UV light kill coronavirus?

How UV light kills microbes

Viruses don’t reproduce on their own, but they do have genetic material, either DNA or RNA. They reproduce by attaching to cells and injecting their DNA. Some viruses burst out of the infected cell (this form of reproduction is called the lytic cycle), while others merge into the infected cell, reproducing every time that cell divides (lysogenic).

If you’ve ever gotten a sunburn, you’ve had a taste of how UV light kills viruses: UV light can damage DNA. A DNA molecule is made of two strands bound together by four bases, adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). These bases are like an alphabet, and their sequence forms instructions for cells to reproduce.

UV light can cause thymine bases to fuse together, scrambling the DNA sequence and essentially throwing a wrench into the machinery. Since the DNA sequence is no longer correct, it can no longer replicate properly. This is how UV light annihilates viruses, by destroying their ability to reproduce.

Will it work on the coronavirus?

COVID-19 is a new breed, and as such there is a dearth of studies on its resistance to UV. That hasn’t stopped people from rolling out UV devices to thwart the virus, however. Companies that produce UV devices are seeing a notable boost in sales, and hospitals are using UV-equipped robots to disinfect hospital rooms; even face masks are getting the UV treatment.

We can look to previous coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS, for insight. Studies on both SARS and MERS show that UV light could inactivate the viruses, so it’s not unreasonable to expect that it will have a similar effect on COVID-19.

An industrial UV lamp
That said, don’t warm your hands by the light of a UV lamp! As mentioned earlier, ultraviolet radiation can also damage human DNA, causing health problems such as skin cancer or cataracts in the eyes.

A particular spectrum of ultraviolet light, far UV-C, “efficiently inactivates bacteria without harm to exposed mammalian skin,” according to a study published in Nature. “This is because, due to its strong absorbance in biological materials, far-UVC light cannot penetrate even the outer (non living) layers of human skin or eye; however, because bacteria and viruses are of micrometer or smaller dimensions, far-UVC can penetrate and inactivate them.”

Research like this Nature study shows that far-UVC lamps can eradicate even airborne viruses without harming people, and so we can imagine a world in which walking through airport security or entering a hospital involves passing through a UV decontamination chamber.

For now, feel free to stick your phone in a UV-emitting cleaning chamber (and be sure to clean all your gadgets daily if you use them often) — but as for personal hygiene, you should probably stick to soap and water.

People here are going fishing, having a good time, I rarely see anyone in a mask, and maybe half with the mask on where it right. I see folks in the store multiple times a day, buying soda, beer, junk food.

Like we had chicken pox parties when I was a kid. Back when we understood immunity and how it works.
Our governor (unless he’s officially gotten his title changed to king and I missed it) released our “recovery plan”. I’ll sum it up for you - we’re on lockdown until he - one man, not our whole elected body’, just him - decides we’re not. I hope this will start to wake people up.

Sounds just like our governor! People are rebelling and there will only be more. I stay home except to walk and ride my bike as I choose to as I don't want to get the virus and then give it to my hubby who can't afford to get it right now due to complications in his health treatment he is on now. What do you think about this vaccine they are trying to come up with? I'm just not sure I trust anything right now that anyone tells me. Not sure if anybody really knows what they are talking about. Seems like it is all just guessing.

I don't know how many out there saw the two Drs who were talking realisticy about Covid it when viral it was loaded with FACTS. They spoke in what was what in there own hospitals. And some was about how they were being told how they HAD TO LIE .. When it came to there official reports. Well you tube decided this was not appropriate And pulled the Dr's post. Yet they are allowing Bill Gates to voice his opion.

I asked the same question - why are we letting someone like Bill Gates have a voice in all of this? I've seen YouTube videos of his speeches where he refers to using vaccines for population control. I'm sorry... what now?

Also - please note the video @GBBUDD posted has already been removed by YouTube for "violating terms of service". In other words, sharing an opposing viewpoint. Amazing. I wonder where people can go to get an opportunity to hear both sides.

@j.w - I agree with you. I would never want to be first in line for a vaccine that has undergone so little testing as this one will surely have. I'm old enough to remember the swine flu vaccine of 1976 - where the vaccine was worse that the flu itself.

The Swine Flu Program was marred by a series of logistical problems ranging from the production of the wrong vaccine strain to a confrontation over liability protection to a temporal connection of the vaccine and a cluster of deaths among an elderly population in Pittsburgh. The most damning charge against the vaccination program was that the shots were correlated with an increase in the number of patients diagnosed with an obscure neurological disease known as Guillain–Barré syndrome (1).

It's a worthwhile read. Let's not let history repeat itself.

my step daughter is dating a Chinese guy who has been at my home for this entire B.S . Don't misunderstand yes the virus is serious HOWEVER so is many many other serious diseases. Anyways we were talking the other night and he said what is wrong with all these people don't they understand this is China what you all are doing right now. The government tells you where you can go. when you can leave your home what hair style you will have "none" When you go to the store how you will act where you will stand how long you have to shop what direction you will turn in the store. What tv shows or what videos we can see we are being manipulated by GOOGLE, TWITTER ,FACEBOOK,AND AMAZON,APPLE, MICROSOFT just to scratch the bucket but add up there COMBINED WEALTH and there common views and you'll see why we are in such disturbing times. We are being sold out to the highest bidder!!!!!!!!!! American greed was something a few years back now its beyond Dangerous.
WAKE THE _ _ _ _ UP AMERICA.
