Just a "HEADS UP" to anyone who likes to eat healthy. It seems that a company in British Columbia has developed a GMO apple that does not turn brown when exposed to air! AND, the apples have been approved for sale in the USA, with approval pending in Canada. So if you see a new apple on your store shelves named "Northern Gold", you may want to give them a wide berth. That is so wrong @HARO
Wonder what they did to it to make it not turn?
Just found this:
The apples were created by "silencing" the gene that typically makes the fruit turn brown. These genetically-modified green and red apples can keep their normal colors indefinitely. The company is attempting to get approval for two types of apples: "arctic granny" and "arctic golden."

Not only will the outside of the fruit never brown, but if an apple is sliced into pieces, the exposed white flesh won't turn brown. The founder of Okanagan Specialty Fruits, Neal Carter, explained that an apple could be sliced and left that way for weeks without changing color.

Mr. Carter believes that growers will benefit because there will no longer be bruised apples that must be thrown away. Yet the genetically-modified foods debate has surfaced again around these new fruits. Growers in California are skeptical about the new apples because they think they will drive other apple prices down.

The reporter interviewed a couple of Okanagan apple growers, and their main fear was that, with the current backlash against GMO foods, people would stop buying apples, PERIOD! And as for throwing away bruised apples, that's BS! Where do you think apple juice and cider come from?

I'll take my brown apples please. I'd grow one but don't want to deal w/the worms. I know you can put little footies on the apples when they are tiny to prevent them but that's too much trouble.

We have three really sweet apple trees, the darn stink bugs ruin the fruit. I can not spray due to the fact two of the trees are hanging over the ponds.

Hey addy try putting the nylon footies or cut off nylon stockings so they cover the tiny apples and just do it for as many apples as you want to save and maybe it will work against the stink bugs too. You don't have to do it for all the apples on your tree. I have not tried it.

Someone wrote this on a garden forum:
The idea of using nylon footies has been around for a long time, as has the use of ziplock baggies. Footies are the preferred method on apples at the Home Orchard Society in Portland, OR, though I can't for the life of me understand why.

I have seen some reports indicating that codling moth can lay eggs through the footies, which are basically the same type of material as panty hose. But whether that is true or not, plastic ziploc bags work marvelously well on apples, and are both cheaper and easier to install and remove than footies or any nylon material, certainly if they must be affixed with twist-ties.

Speculation that ziplock bags cause rot from excessive moisture is off the mark. They do not. Ziplocks also provide a high degree of protection from the surface fungal infections known as sooty blotch and flyspeck, while nylon materials do not.

Footies do have an important use, and that is on peaches and other stone fruits, that do suffer from the humidity of the bags. They are attached by a single tie over the branch or twig holding the fruit. No staples or ties are required.

I am all in favor of experimentation, but have tried footies on apples, and, in my view they are clearly inferior to ziplock bags for this application for the reasons given above. And panty hose would be a problem for me, since I don't use enough of it to pull out of panty service for covering fruit. In fact, I don't use any. Yet.

bruised apples that are grown around here go on the mark down table and people buy them for baking (just cut out the bad parts) or to feed their horses or other livestock (so long as they are just bruised and not rotten)

Heard about a week ago that the patent or whatever for the non-browning apples has been sold to an American concern.

Any other kefer enthusiasts here?
Kefir Benefits

Kefir is a unique cultured dairy product that is one of the most probiotic rich foods on the planet and has incredible medicinal benefits for healing issues like leaky gut.

Its unique name comes from the Turkish work "keif", which means "good feeling".

For centuries, it has been used in European and Asian folk medicine due to the wide variety of conditions it has been known to cure. When made correctly, it is one of my favorite drinks and, after reading this article, I hope that you consider including it into your regular natural health regimen.

Kefir Nutrition Facts

Kefir is a fermented milk product (cow, goat or sheep milk) that tastes like a drinkable yogurt.

Kefir contains high levels of vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, vitamin K2, biotin, folate, enzymes and probiotics. Because kefir does not have a standardized nutrition content, the content values can vary based on the cows, cultures, and region where it is produced. Yet even with the range in values, kefir has superior nutrition.

Because of kefir's unique set of nutrients it has been show to benefit the body in 7 main ways:
•Boost Immunity
•Heal Inflammatory Bowel Disease
•Build Bone Density
•Fight Allergies
•Improve Lactose Digestion
•Kill Candida
•Support Detoxification

And these are just a few of the known benefits of daily kefir use.
