Bike ride with my hubby — on a maintained bike trail that runs parallel to the Red River (Louisiana). It’s been a nature encounter day for us. I spotted a Western Rat Snake (hubby couldn’t figure out why I slammed on the breaks and said, “I found one!” — but he knows I’m weird....). Then, a little further along, he spotted a huge water turtle (slider?) on the path. He moved it so it wouldn’t get harassed or run over. The river is high and running fast. It’s a lovely spring day!

We have a few places that might be a copper head condo. One is the rock wall of the up slope side of the pond, I look very carefully before I work there. The other is a wall near our drive. That is close to where we spotted the copperhead.

Well shut my mouth, I built a little frog pond the other day and had my first visitor today. A very pretty non-venomous garter snake. I'd take a picture but he saw me and ran!
This pond will not have any fish as it's just for frogs, birds and I guess snakes too!
I'm still adding plants to it. I put some duckweed and Parrots Feather in there so far and a few plants around the edge. It's not even a foot deep so very easy to keep clean. Think I may add an aerator or a small filter eventually.

without any fish, j.w, you're going to have the entire surface covered with duckweed, you know! Looks very nice though, rustic and natural.

I've also discovered that under logs is a good place to find them. A couple of years ago I decided to move a log that was along my garden path in order to dig up, divide, & move the day lilies that were growing alongside it. Well, I grabbed the edge of the log, rolled it over & uncovered a big copperhead snoozing underneath. Not sure who was more surprised, him or me! LOL Needless to say, I just gently rolled that log right back into place & decided to do a different garden chore that day. ;)

I’m lucky that I haven’t seen any of the venomous snakes around the past few years. Well, dangerous venomous ones, as garters do have a very mild venom. Due to their diet, they’re actually more of a poisoning hazard than a venom hazard! Kittens are 7 weeks old, except the newest one. I’m working on finding homes for the two not really suitable as barn cats. I thought I had a good home lined up, but someone else gifted her a cat, so they couldn’t take another.

Yep but I love the look of it and will only allow some to be in there at all times. I will scoop out the excess and give it to my greedy goldfish in the bigger fish pond.
I wanted to have this pond just for wild critters and I don't have to put a net on it!

@JamieB I didn't know that about garter snakes! From now on I will be careful when I pick them up. I thought the only thing they could do was put off a nasty smell. I think this snake is the same snake I got from one of my neighbors about 2 yrs ago as her hubby has a fear of all snakes! They aren't real fond of rabbits on their property either but sorry I can't get the rabbits to just stay on my property

A local hardware store has trout days every year. I picked up (100) 6-8 inch Rainbow Trout today In 4 heavy plastic bags. They infuse air at a high pressure into the bags, with the nozzle in the water before sealing . That's enough for them to survive the 10 minute ride home. I originally ordered 50 Brook Trout and 50 Rainbow Trout but, was informed 3 weeks after ordering, that they didn't have any more Brook Trout.

I imagine you have some mosters in there that see your new addition as tasty morsels

I lost the largest ones last year due to an unprecedented heat wave. They top out at about 18 inches, and weigh about 3 pounds. I think the smaller fish will be fine. They were leaping out of the water at bugs shortly after introducing them to the ponds. I keep the larger fish well fed. They love the Zeigler gold food twice a day.
