Still a bunch of rain falling here today. Boy all I have to say is it better clear up for tomorrow like they said it would. Having family over for a BBQ and don't want to be stuffed in the house watching it pour out there

Beautiful sunny day all day today, and I thought it was supposed to rain. Must have moved the rain to tomorrow for Mother's Day, but only 30% chance, so that's nothing! I think it was in the low 80's here today, simply gorgeous.
I noticed a hard maple that I planted 4 years ago did not leaf out either. I'm finding out that many trees hardy for my zone are NOT hardy for a winter like last year. Darn and double darn! I want to plant an evergreen wind break, have it in an arc, breaking the NW winds for winter. Wondering what type of trees to plant. I wanted to get the Leyland Spruce (I think that's the right name) that JW and others recommended, grows fast and good looking tree, but not finding them in this area, so worried they barely will make it in this zone. So, better stay away from them after all. Any other evergreens that grow little faster than say a Blue Spruce? I kinda want blue and green colors, so I have some variety. Already have another one picked out that is yellow on the tips as it first comes out in the spring, and changes back to green. That will be the "point" on my curve.

Worked all day in the yard, then all evening at work, now I am tired, but must go outside and sit by pond for a small while, feel the need to make a fire and have a glass of red wine before bed. Right now it is 48 degrees, and the rain has stopped for now! JW I will let you know when I need more rain, so quick sending me your rain clouds!!

That parking ticket was because I parked in a handicap zone, but that day the snow was piled so high on the streets downtown, and it was snowing like crazy, and I did not see the sign. I had my mother with me and was looking for a spot that did not have too much snow, as I have to help dear old mom walk across the street to shop downtown, and it was slippery too, so I was more concerned with finding a close spot that did not have too much snow, cause I do not want my mom to slip and fall. The Crown Prosecutor bought my sob story and dropped the charge!

they are leyland pines or leyland cypress ce and they can grow 2 ft a year but once they get tall you have to knock snow off them or they will split ,but most pines do that but here they use them as wind breaks

Leyland cypress, yes that is what they were, thanks, Sissy! BTW, I found the hardy palm seeds you sent to me, about 2 weeks ago. Put some of them in a small cup of water, change the water daily, and the others in ground. Nothing sprouted so far .... still waiting. Will keep you posted if I get any "babies"! :)
Yes, with my wind, I probably just need to stick with the slow growing spruces and pines, instead of the faster growing trees that tend to be not as strong. I just want something to look like a wind break before 20 years from now. LOL And, how to keep the freaking dogs from marking them and killing them! Grrr ... my dogs never did that until the neighbor's Golden (who is not fixed, my boys ARE fixed) started coming and peeing on everything. Guess will have to put a cage up around them wide enough they can't hit the trees. That will look stupid, but may save the trees.
Oh, and just noticed yesterday the top of the 1 of 2 blue spruce (I planted 4) I still have left is dead on the top 8". Good grief, that means it will die, too. Soooo frustrating all the death last winter brought to my yard. Oh well, we surely wont' have another lengthy one like that for another 15-20 years, right?! That's my hope anyhow.

I am sure we have lost plants too, just waiting it out to see if they come back. A lot of my loss is due to deer damage, munched down to the ground
An inch of rain yesterday, 82 today, plants growing like crazy

Going to take my mom out for coffee and lunch, then we are going to the greenhouse to look for more moss for around the pond. I need another string of solar lights and a little wire black fancy fence to hold the big plants back from walk path, once they get growing. I love to have lots of lights at night, cause spend lots of time outside at night, and having friends over for wine and party by the pond. This way the path will be visable in the dark, so no body trips and fall in pond, cause I don't have a net big enough to get them out! ha ha ha

Sun is out shining, but clouds coming over the hill now. It has been a cooler spring than normal for here in Sunny Medicine Hat, but that is ok, cause my moss and the marsh marilold will look good longer! :)
can you see the fresh moss?

We woke up to snow yesterday morning, about 5 inches. When I looked at the thermometer around 11am it was 63 outside. It took all day for the snow to melt on the decks and in the yard. We still have patches of snow here and there but thinking today it will be gone. High of 63 and mainly sunny today. :)
