I would love to be in the warmer weather Priscilla. We have a sailboat that we haven't decided where we are going to put it yet. Love the east coast but not the hurricanes.
JW has plants coming up and even colleen has no snow around her pond. I have no ice on my pond but I have at least 8 inches of snow still on the ground:(. Come on spring! We have a Blizzard watch tonight, it's just snowing here right now, but down in the valley is where the drifts happen. I am so ready for the warmed of the sun!

wow , i feel guilty saying im glad the "cold" temps are gone - back to 55 last night and hoping for some warmer weather again just in time for the weekend - thinking it might reach 70s again... sorry for the COLD weather everyone seems to be still having.

and  - sure didnt think about grass snakes eating the small goldfish... wow. We have evicted a toad and a frog in hopes of giving our smaller fish a chance, but we lost track of two before we re-housed the smaller ones into our "nursery cage" in the pond, where we can atleast keep them corralled and can count them!
A downside to our nursery - we have dace that SOME are JUST the right size to come and go when they want - taunting our goldfish and shubunkins that cant... and we have had to rescue a couple of those dace hat were just a tad fat to fit!

Looks like Dallas TX is going to go from 60 to 20 this coming week! And, Canada, stop sending us your cold weather! I know you're tired of it, too, but you are supposed to have it. Heehee. Snow/freezing rain/sleet warning for tomorrow and Sunday. Yuck! Only expecting few inches of snow, but then going down to 20 and single digit days first part of next week. I'm sure hoping for the 40's end of next week. Hope that holds true that long. Yep, I think March is definitely coming in like a lion, had better go out like a lamb!
Priscilla, it could be your water is too warm for your fish to spawn. I think someone on here said there is a narrow window where the fish will spawn AND the babies will be "normal". Too hot, they may be deformed, too cool and the spawning doesn't happen. So, that is something you will have to deal with in your TOO MUCH WARM climate.
Haver, what has your electric bill done with your heater in 24/7? I had mine plugged in all the time, too, and no more. The koi pond is frozen over, but maybe only about 1" thick. Air bubbler line has frozen, not sure how that happened, but maybe when the line pulled free (or maybe pushed free because of too cold, and line freezing???) water siphoned up to the water level, and froze in there. Will get that thawed out this weekend, then run that to keep opening. Goldfish pond still running perfectly, water fountain pump just below surface keeping a nice 12" hole, and skimmer feeding stream and big pump running bog nicely. Going to switch koi pond to have similar issues so I can keep it running and being filtered by larger bog ... spring project in the works here!
On a good note, it is nice and sunny here this morning, sure disguises the cold temps that hit me in the face when I went out to feed horses! Oh, and the horse water trough heater has remained unplugged, too. As long as I can chop the ice up and remove ice twice a day, they have access to water for at least a couple of hours each time, which is enough for now. After my double electric bill for Jan 15 - Feb. 15, sure don't want that to happen again!!!

The dragon flies eat the baby fish??? Yikes! I didn't know that. I have my floating plants netted, because the fish were eating the roots, but I have some other areas that maybe okay to lay eggs. I have had one set of baby fish, but they were guppies (or something like small like that). I would love to get some 'pond mutts', as Addy calls them.

How big do the goldfish need to be to spawn? My koi are still very small, the largest being about 6/7 inches. The goldfish are about 3 inches.

MINUS 5 F. again this morning! My daughter's furnace stopped working last night, and here I am housesitting until the repairman comes back with a replacement motor. We keep OUR house so cool, I can hardly tell there's no heat here. :cold:

Mitch we got the warming too, wind chill values going down to minus 40 below, getting the big red 1500 watt heater out cause the 1250 watt cannot cut it in that cold. Went outside to check the pond the the wind just about ripped my back screen door off!! Pond is covered in LOTS of ice after last night and cannot see the fish anymore as the ice is too thick now. Going down to minus 31 Celsius (-23 F) they say even way colder with the wicked wind driving the values down to below minus 40. Need to get coffee going and prep the pond for tonight... Freezing in Canada!!!

Oh and last night I discovered how to make the best popcorn ever!! Maple Butter Popcorn... It was light, sweet and buttery tasting!! It was really just the best ever!!
In my popcorn pot over the stove, put in a big scoup of GEE (clairified butter) enough to coat the bottom of the pot good and cover the popcorn kernals good, and bring to medium high temp and then add a couple tablespoons of real Canadian Maple Syrup into the hot pot of GEE and Popcorn kernals. The Maple Syrup will start to hiss and crackle. Put the lid on and listen for the corn to pop. Make sure it is not higher than medium high or syrup may burn. I did this twice, and the popcorn gets popping and pops just before the syrup starts to get too hot. The GEE butter cooks at a higher temp without burning and that was just the lightest, fluffiest, and Maple buttery Sweet popcorn ever!!!
