CE We do see flocks fly over here as well but never in those numbers.
When we first moved into our place 20 years ago we had a small flock of cedar evergreens. They had some age to them so were tall and lots of limbs but not as full in folage as a pine. We had many, many pheasants that would roost there in the evening. One night we counted over 50 pheasants. They have declined in numbers in Iowa now to the point where you can drive around the gravel roads in an afternoon and never see any. Sad, I guess a combination of bad winters, flooding and removal of habitat, coyotes and such. (opps think this topic was a page or 2 ago)

Quite the mixture of weather here today. Rain, hail, sleet, snow and thundersnow. Luckily the temps stayed around 34F so we did not get as much snow as originally expected. It was sleet most of the day. It collected enough on the gravel roads that they were difficult to drive. Would easily suck you into the ditch if you got to close to the shoulders. Thunder and lightning as it was sleeting. The blizzard warning we were in has now been canceled. Still snowing and now wind is blowing like crazy but could of been much worse had we had snow all day. Temps tomorrow near 40. Cold next week again. Single digits at night. :(

Here is a video I took of them this morning. They were in the field behind my house, after spending the night in the field in front of my house. If you watch the whole video, just over a minute, any house that you see in the distance is minimum mile away. The one straight out from my house is a mile, the one to the left is over a mile as the crow flies, and the one to the right is about 1.5 miles! So, that will give you some perspective as to how far out in the field those gees are and how much area they cover. They were spread out side to side, but figure they would have easily covered over 40 acres worth. Hmm ... not sure what I've done wrong! I hear the sounds, but can't see the video. Can anyone else see it? I know I clicked on "publish" on YouTube, but figure since I can hear it, I should be able to see the video, too.

much cooler this morning - only 51 - compared to 70 yesterday... but then yesterday turned out to be a grey, rainy, misty type of day, with some rumbles of thunder...
Hoping that the weekend is nicer so that i can be out there!

Country Escape,

That is a great video of the geese, there is a LOT of them! Do they come through your area like this every year? Or was this an unusually large flock and a chance encounter to see this many?

There are two places to see LOTS of birds during their migratory flys here in the Nebraska/Iowa area. One is out somewhere near Kearney and Grand Island on the Platte River (to view thousands of sandhill cranes and blue herons, etc) and just across the Missouri River on the Iowa side is DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge where you can view thousands of ducks and geese and eagles and other wildlife.

If you ever plan to pass through this area in the fall and early winter by car, try to look these areas up for the best times and take a moment to stop to view the wildlife. I don't think I would make a special trip just for it, but if it fits into other plans, it is definitely worth the stop.

Of course, if you have this in your backyard (and front) why bother traveling to see it elsewhere? :)

Snowed (with rain starting it out) yesterday morning possibly 3-4 inches, almost looked like a mini-blizzard. By the afternoon it was mostly gone and the roads were dry and clear. The problem this year is that is was so doggone cold all season that these quick-melt snows don't soak into the earth since the frost is so deep. They just run off and down the rivers and streams they go. Hopefully some portion of it remains, but we need a lot more.

What a neat video CE and how lucky you are to be able to have that gaggle of geese right in your own front yard.
We get those Snow geese and the Trumpeter Swans here in the farmers fields also CE and wonder what it is they find so much of to eat in the fields? I assume that is why they are there in such large numbers.
Ahhhhhhhhhh, just found this from the net on what the swans are eating so prolly the same for the geese:
During the day they are seen feeding on upland grasses and waste grain in the fallow agricultural fields. After the weather freezes, and when they can find them, they enjoy cultivated tubers such as sweet potatoes and white potatoes (carrots and turnips, too). They also feed while swimming in local waters and can be seen up-ending or dabbling to reach submerged aquatic plants.

We get the geese here too on the farmers field, they are eating the corn and grain left behind on the farmers field and then they look for nesting spots down by the river. My dogs chase them away before I can even get a picture half the time. They fly off a short ways and then land again, they are not really afraid of the dogs cause they are old dogs and Poppy does not run too fast these days.

Sissy what happened to your pond liner? In the winter when the ice builds up it you pond will lose water due to water displacement when ice builds up. Is the pond still leaking?
