Sissy, good luck with your new dig! Glad you have friends you can confer with but know you know what needs to be done on your own, too. I do everything on my own, too. Seems many of us do!
Catfish, I moved into this house "on the prairie" in Sept. 2009, and the geese have come to the surrounding fields EVERY Feb. since then. It must be in their migratory route, assuming they are heading north now. They eat all the corn that gets left in the fields since the farmers these days whip through the fields with their high powered combines, never worrying about the excess corn that gets tossed out! 20 years ago, you would find very little corn seeds left in the fields, but nowadays the farmers are all about fast. Corn is so hybrid that they harvest before it's totally dry, because if they wait, and we have high winds, the whole field might be laid over, and then the corn falls out of the shuck, and some onto the ground. It's crazy how they are changing things. But, the snow geese sure make a feast out of what is left! They are 90% of the time in corn fields, almost never in soy bean fields, so those fields must be cleaner, not as much waste. Corn hybrids have such thin stalks, so it goes through the combine easier, that it also breaks off easier. Anyhow, I love seeing the geese. They were here again this morning, little farther down, but could definitely hear them as they took flight to go in search of food for the day. Now it's quiet again. Fields around my house must be safest for them, and since only 3 houses on this 1.5 x 1 mile rectangle, you can see why they choose this area.
These pic are on Feb 18 with the snow, and Feb. 21 with no snow. Woohoo, spring is around the corner, I believe! Even if it's supposed to get colder this coming week again, only to 30's for high, I can handle that!
Sunny morning, very nice outside, winds have finally ceased. My large trash container that gets emptied once a month by a truck got blown over in the wind. Darn it, cause I can't move it, far too heavy. Glad I have tractor, but ground is soft, so will wait a few days until gets colder again, and ground is more solid to drive tractor.
Shingles on my house are standing up from the winds, 7 tornadoes in my area 2 nights ago.
Lots of damage north and east of me, but just trash container blown over and shingles damaged. Will get estimate to see if it needs to be replaced. Hoping the guy says I need a new roof, and insurance pays for the bulk. I want to put metal roof on, pay the extra out of my tax refund, hopefully. Will have to wait for estimate, though, since insurance is $1,000 deductible.
