Big Lou, I never drain my big ponds, but there a big filters that run year round, and big fish too, but in the small pond out front that I shut down and turn pumps off, that I drain and in the spring then it is easeir to get going once everything melts away.

CE Have you seen your fish lately? Looks like a big snow drift there on your pond. It would not hurt to melt away a larger hole and take a peek inside....

It was awesome to see my fish kids when the ice/snow melted this week off of the pond. But yikes the leaves that have gotten in there and I mow/raked the yard last fall so there are no leaves in my yard!

If there is no fish Big Lou, and the pond is small, then you could drain and give good cleaning if that is how you usually do things. I do that with my small pond in the front yard, as it sits under a large tree and gets many leaves. Plus that small pond does not run all year as it is only about 100 gallons.

If the pond is larger and the pumps are running all year round, then I would only do a partial water change and net the leaves off the bottom. That way the pond's ecosystem should still be safely intact. If the pumps are turned off and the water has not been flowing for some time, then the quality of the water goes bad fast, then I would do a better cleaning.....

CE I see you are at 42 degrees right how, and the hole in the ice is a good size, I think the ice should melt away fairly soon, but if it does not, then a heater could be used. Have you been able to see your fish down under the ice threw that hole?

Nope, tried to look last night with a flashlight, Colleen, but they are all hiding. I'm somewhat worried about them anyhow. Been reading others talking about "sleeping sickness" with fish, where they lay on their sides, look dead, until you disturb them. That's what several of my goldfish were doing right when it got the first cold snap. They seemed fine after that, when the water warmed with milder temps again, so now I wonder how they are fairing with the much colder air we had 2 weeks ago! I have 3/4 of the koi pond is totally open, and heater is off on that, too, but it never got a drift of snow on it. I've not seen any of the koi since pond froze, not even this morning, so they are all hiding in the "garages" and snuggled in other places as well, I guess. So, to me, the snow didn't do any good keeping the water warm, it made it colder. But, stream is now running again in the goldfish pond, so that will circulate warmer air to the water, until we get cold again tomorrow. Geesh ... then warmer again. It was in the 50's yesterday. I turned the heater back on in the goldfish pond, it's hanging right in front of the skimmer. It's in a wire basket, so can't melt anything if it touches. It's for a rubber bucket/tub, so it's safe for in my pond. Will try to circulate that warmer water and try to melt off more of the snow. At least the air temps were warmer the last few days. Going below freezing again tomorrow, but then back up to 40's on the weekend, I believe.

Mine disappeared like that to CE when we had the freeze here and the pond was froze over. They are all fine but they did have a couple holes open all the time. I'm sure yours are just fine taking a little nappy till it warms up some.

Cold here today, only got to low 20's, stayed steady temp all day long, but the sun did try to show itself this afternoon, off and on. Tomorrow, 40, then 24 on Friday, but back up to sunny and 45 on Sunday! Talk about see-saw! Geesh ... I'll be looking forward to the sunny and 45 on Sunday for sure!

It doesn't feel like springs around the corner here. Currently 25F. We are under a wind advisory tomorrow and will be getting back down into the single digits before the weekend.
No Chinook winds for us, just cold winds!
Hurry up springtime!!
