Addy, it really sucks that your hard working husband is one that is out of pay for the duration of the "government shut down", when the elected officials are sitting at home, drawing their paycheck as usual. Why in the world would they want to come back to work? I want to sit and home and get my paycheck too ... maybe the State of Illinois should shut down! Wait, Illinois is already broke, LOL, better keep on working. Oh, and if the &#@#$^ computer techs would fix my freaking computer, I COULD get a good days work in! Geesh ... over a week now. And, when I asked about it yesterday morning, I was given a curt, "Patti, there are presently 5 techs working on your issue. We hope to have you up and running very soon." Well, thank you very much, but does that mean I'm to sit quietly and do nothing until someone figures out the issue? Why not bring me another brand new computer. That's where the trouble began .... :banghead3:
Oh, the weather has been wonderful, so that helps my "poor work attitude". Cloudy the last couple of days, but warm, close to 80 or above. Hoping for some rain tomorrow and better chance on Thurs! Can't dig until I get a good amount that will soak past the top inch of ground.

Well just got back form Calgary, hubby doing much much better than doctors thought he would! So very happy for him!
The weather sucks, getting colder every day and near freezing temperatures almost every night!

Addy, I feel bad for your hubby, that sucks that he won't get a cheque!

And I will be on strike for sure at midnight, this Saturday night!!

Colleen, what do you expect the duration of the strike to be? Will you lose your job, or will you get to keep it, once the strike is over? I'll be hoping for a quick return to work. Sucks to be without a check for anyone! I would be devastated as well, but have buffer, as Addy calls it. But, so many people go check to check, and even the ones that are making a ton of money and have 2 paychecks per household!

I wish it was hot here too!! Maybe it will get warmer for the strike!

You cannot lose your job because of strike, so says our laws. I cannot be replaced either! Our union is very big and pretty strong, and the strike envolves all the stores in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba! The province of Ontario took the offer as they are paid very very low wages compared to us, and the offer was good for them. Here in Alberta they think cause they pay us so much that we should do the job of two people! Everybody worked to death, managers very unhappy as they are not union and must work very long days to get the job done. The stores are getting overrun with extra stock sitting in the back room cause nobody has time to get everything out. Mice are a big problem too! The roof has been leaking for months and conditions are getting worse at all our stores. I have put in many free hours after I punched out to help out my managers catch up many times, they need to make us a better offer!

I will be paid 10 dollars a hour, paid weekly, to walk the picket line. I make a little more than 20 dollars per hour normally, so this will be half my normal wage, but I will not be taxed, nor will I have to pay union dues during the strike. I will be more than fine, cause hubby make a good wage and works very very hard too, thank goodness!

Last night while shopping for a few last minute things, I noticed all the workers are huddled together in corners, talking quietly, felt like the last few days on a sinking ship!

Have to wait 3 to 5 days for the biopsy's to come back on hubby and hemoglobin is at 9.1 and has to get up to 13 but that is after all the blood they gave him and doctor said the next week or 2 are important part and he is hoping his count does not fall as it was 9.6 after 1 test and then 9.4 and now 9.1 .I can tell you this Duke hospital is one great hospital .I'm exhausted I stayed there and nurses are in every 15 minutes all night long .Blood they keep taking hubby tells them is borrowed blood . :cheerful: 6 pints of blood all together .Gosh addy hope you and your hubby will be OK with this shutdown ,isn't your hubby soon to retire .Prayers are out Lou and hope for the best as it can all be so scarey .

Sounds like your hubby is holding his own and trying to fight this thing sissy. Darn good hospital he is in and they will give him the best of care. You be strong and take care of yourself so you can keep your strength up too like Colleen said. Hoping we will hear his blood count goes up and stays up and that the doc's can get him regulated and keep this from happening to him again.

It is more important your hubby gets healthy right now sissy, we will survive, may or may not get paid for time off, depends on the paid politicians. This time off might mess up his retirement, Depends on if they count as worked days or not.

So, what is the expected number of days the government is going to be "shut down", Addy, have they given any guesses? I'm just wondering. I work for the State, and our State is in such a financial mess. I can think of soooo many ways to help out. But, people have depended on all the benefits the State provides to it's employees, it would be very hard to get them to allow some of those benefits to be dropped. For instance, I get 12 holidays! Yes, 12, and 13 in a general election year for goodness sake, since we get election day off every other year. That's crazy! Can you imagine the money saved for the State if they took away just one of those 12 days??? I have no idea, but I'm sure it would help a bunch. And, how many employers pay more than 5 or 6 days anyhow? Why not remove 3 or 4 of the days? Yeah, I would miss them, but as long as I kept my job, I would not fight it at all. But, there are people who would fight it tooth and nail, and it would never happen, but it should. Illinois funds their own health insurance for their employees. Yeah, and IL is so broke that the providers - doctors, dentists, hospitals, eye doctors, etc. - are having to wait 10 months right now to get paid! And, then IL is paying interest on top of that to the provider! Yes, they deserve interest, but come on, 10 months!!! No way could a new doctor open an office in IL. He could not afford to run his business unless he was able to get a loan to pay all his bills for the first year, until a steady income started coming in. It's unbelievable. I hate politics, and therefore I really don't understand them very well, but I do understand when things are not correct. IL is terrible .... too many bad politicians, and now Obama will be forever linked to IL as well. Can we please get some good politicians from our state?
Oh ... and the weather was upper 70's and muggy all day. Still no rain, but hoping tonight and tomorrow, best chance this week!
