Just had a massive winter storm move on out. Left us with 8 inches of the white stuff. Tried to go to work this mornign but didn't make it very far. The highway looked like it hadnt been plowed at all and you couldn't tell where the highway ended and the ditch was. It took me 12 minutes to go 3 miles. I decided to turn around and use a snow day. Gonna get cold the next few days so I'll be plugging in the pond heater tonight. Should have worked on the bog yesterday to get it back up and running.

Four inches of the white stuff here in Nebraska (southeast corner), fluffy yet wet. Kinda pretty though and we need the moisture! Gotta brave it so I can get to class 40 miles away here shortly...Might just take a few pics on my way. My fishies are nice and cozy on the porch in their aquarium.

My ponds are getting a very nice winter water change. We are at an inch so far (prediction was 0.1 inch) , they are saying 2 inches coming over night.

Crazy. That's all I can say, just crazy! Bottom-of-pond temp was 60 when I checked this morning. SIXTY!! That tells you that we've had some warm weather lately. But we've had lots of gusty wind with temps staying mid-40's today, so sure that will start to drop. I think the fish were all hiding -- maybe they suspect something....

Really, even for the south, we should be running temps close to freezing by now, maybe even some snow.

TM, You want to hear crazy, My water temps when I checked last night were 71f! When that storm came through we got hammered pretty bad, By noon today the water temps had dropped to 64. That's a huge difference for a 4.5' deep 10,000 gallon pond in less than 24 hours.

It's crazy everywhere lately. We had 50's this morning, down to 32 when I got off of work. Lots of water standing everywhere, and I think the frost was out of the ground, so it should soak in, which is good. Ditches are full and overflowing, rivers are out of their banks. The winds are the killer, though. Winds up to 25 mph and gusting 35 and higher. Yuck. Satellite tv is going in and out tonight with the winds. After today and tomorrow getting down to single digits during the night, we should be heading up to 30/40's for the weekend. Hoping things don't freeze up again. Will put heater in each pond tomorrow after work, hopefully keep the waterfall running. We shall see ....

Well we are having snow and blowing snow and zero fahrenheit right now. Cold but could be a lot colder so I am very greatful. Pond running good, bottom ponds have very much ice but water still moving well under the ice. Lower ponds always get more ice cause they flow slower that the top pond. :)

heater is ON!! :)

Colleen, wonder what happened to your weather banner? It's 25 here, or so my banner says. My outdoor thermometer needs a new battery, so will get that done this weekend. VERY windy last night, glad that has settled down some. Temps going down to single digits tonight, but then ... how does this happen ... weather.com says 22 for high tomorrow and 21 for a low?! Does that mean it will get down to 6 before midnight, then up to 22 just after midnight, and stay steady? I'm confused. What I do like it temps on the weekend above freezing and sunny! Pond is totally open, just little bit of ice next to waterfall, so hoping tonight's cold snap will not freeze things again.

Oh my, finally got weather.com to show me 10 day forecast ... upper 40's next week, and 50 by the following weekend! Woohoo, now that will make a person think of spring!
I got a video of the snow geese with my phone on way home from work yesterday, but it's really blurry. Going to put better camera in car and see if I can get them up close like they were, and show the size of their flock. I drove up the road and then turned and went south, and I swear that flock covered at least 40 acres of ground, and they were solid! Sometime I would like to know just how many are gathering in our area in numbers. I know a couple of years ago, I watched a flock fly over, flock after flock, never ended, and estimated at least 50 birds per "V", and then counted the V's. I was well over 5,000 when I stopped watching. Can you tell I'm fascinated with them? Glad they don't stick around all year, but sure enjoy seeing them in the winter. Gives me a break from the humdrum birds I have in my yard "on the prairie" ... sparrows, starlings, and pigeons. Oh well, at least I have some birds!
