CE. I'm going that the pump quit. We have gotten down to 1F in the past week and the waterfall and bog were still going. Just going to leave running all winter. I'm guessing now that my water loss is from the water fall freezing a bit and forcing the water out and going under liner. I will fix in the spring when I can put new liner down for waterfall.

CE you got way more snow than we did here at Sullivan. We only got 3/4 of an inch! Today most of it melted away with the sun out nice and bright.

Ok so I have to post here to see what the temp is outside. My in/out thermometer says it's 33 outside. Weather.com says 34 ... and on here ... I won't know til I click "post"! Yep, Brandonsdad, I think the pump likely quit, too. I won't know now for a long time, but I guess if I can keep the bog running, I won't get anything getting all yucky in there. I never did get the umbrella palm plant/roots pulled out before it got cold, so that's going to rot. I'll have to get that done before water gets too warm in the spring. Otherwise, all "fall cleanup" was done. Just left a layer of stuff on the bottom of each pond, since the frogs were snuggling into it, and so were the fish! Didn't want to remove their "blankets".
OK, so on here it says 32. Good deal, we're all on the same page again. However, W.C said my low yesterday was 14, and that I think was a little high ... close though.

We have had to minus 45 here before and things have froze quite hard even with only one heater to keep open hole for three ponds, and currently all the water ways have a hard ice shell several inches thick now, and the water still moving nice under the ice. As long as the pump does not clogged up or die, water has never froze in my lines. I do keep extra pump on hand and hoses just in case, but I have three main pumps going right now, a Laguna 1000gph (four years old at least and has been running non stop) in the bottom pond, and two pumps in the middle pond that go to the top pond, aqua scape 750 and five year old Laguna 2000 that should be dead soon, been running non stop since I bought it. I find if you have a very good pre-filter the pumps last much longer. IF ONE Pump dies I should still be more than fine as the water will still flow with the other pumps going.

CE eventually you will find a system that works for you and you will get all the "kinks" worked out cause I have faith in you and your a die hard ponder like the rest of us! :)

maybe something clogged up the pump I have that happen a lot during the fall and winter months as plants die off and fish are rooting for food they stir things up and it clogs up my pumps all the time ..Thats why I bought a leaf basket but have to wait for spring to install it .This way that catches most of the gunk before it gets to the pump .My pump can be submerged or out of water and for leaf basket it has to be out of water .I use the foam pipe wrap around my exposed sump pump hose .I paid a 1.87 a piece for it and it is 4 feet long to wrap the pipe .

My new pump can handle solids but I always keep my leaf basket in the skimmer box. My pump sits in the back half of my skim box. It came with a mesh bag that I used for a bit in the fall when the leafs were bad. Since this is my first winter keeping the pond going I took the basket out and the mesh bag out too to prevent ice from forming and stopping the pump.

I don't have a skimmer ,no need for it ,no trees or things to blow into the pond

Today at the river, I got lots of sun of my face, and it felt good. It felt nice and warm with the winter sun shining so bright, 10 days since winter solstisce has past. Sun did feel warmer today, and stronger.... just a wee little bit, enough to give me hope for a early spring! :D.

An open shot of the middle pond, second last picture:)
