It's dark out, but the sky's still light, and probably will be for hours.

But my camera is starting to pull them in.

I've never seen anything like this. I am in awe. Whole sky was magenta.

It seems to have calmed down now. Hoping it picks back up tonight, but it was a good show while it lasted.

The second substorm of the night hit just after 11pm and lasted over an hour. It was not as visible as the first but was arguably better on camera. Third substorm seems like it might occur in the next hour, so I'm waiting for that... but I'm getting tired.

Seeing it is seeing it! That's what counts. The overall event wasn't as great as May, although that first substorm that hit here about 9pm was equally amazing in its own way. It made the sky so magenta that it allowed a lot of people to see them for the first time.

The third substorm hit here at about 2:30am. It was the least impressive of the three, but I'm still glad I waited up for it. But I'm a tired mess today.

Milton is a monster storm. Hang on.
We're OK. Milton WAS a monster storm. We were north of landfall, which was the windier (gusts ~100MPH), rainier (15+ inches of rain in less than 24 hours) side. A few hours were scary-on-steroids. Personally, my family (including fish and box turtle) is safe and no damage to our houses. Trees lost some limbs and many branches. Area-wide, there are many damaged homes, trees down, people still without power, and rivers are flooding (from the rainfall). Hurricane Helene damage is still here, too. But the sun is shining (really). I feel like the Groundhog who predicts how many more weeks of winter up north ... there are only 6 more weeks of official hurricane season!

Glad you, pets, and property are all safe!

I don't think I posted this but after the auroras died down I did some star photograph a little after 3am. In hindsight I wish I would have done some more but I was so tired I wasn't really thinking. I labelled a few things here.

I've been waiting for this. After days of clouds, they finally broke just before sunset and allowed me to see Comet C/2023 A3! It should still be visible in the western sky for at least a few days but will be getting duller each day. I was out for about 45 minutes and that's about as long as it was visible. This is only the second comet I've ever seen. The first was Neowise in 2020. I could see the tail on this one better than Neowise.
