Yep that's going to be our heat for the winter well w/ all the rest we have shoved in the wood shed from previous collections. We will be chopping down trees for a month w/ how many trees there are. I'm thinking tho w/ them being these crazy armed pine trees that go every which way there is much more branches than actual wood to burn. Next time we go I'll show you all the piles of branches vs the actual wood. Good thing it's just down the road cuz if it were farther away we wouldn't bother w/ it.

Hooray Colleen that your dear John is coming home to recoup and you can be his lovely nurse from now on!

In this colder weather that some of use are having is anyone feeding there fish? I see there is foods now that say you can feed in temps of 30 to 50 degrees. Not sure if i want to try this when we are getting frost off and on now.

I have not feed my fish since middle of September, and I don't bother with the winter food, cause it's mostly a high carbohydrate diet, (easy to digest in winter), something they get naturally in my pond by eating the hornwort, algae, aquatic mint, etc. All these plants are availible during the winter, as the hornwort sinks naturally to the bottom of pond during the winter, and the roots of aquatic mint grow new plant tips even under the ice, and algae seems to grows best in my pond during the winter months, when the other plants have gone dormant. The high protein diet also is more natural for summer, as that is when bugs are plentiful.

By the way the weather is delightful today, currently overcast and 61 degrees. Don't get fooled into feeding fish when the weather appears warm during the day hours, cause the pond water is still cold as the days are not long enough to heat the pond up enough to feed fish. Currently pond water is only 44 degrees.

My pigs are still eating, pond is 55 during the day, but we are dropping to 27 tonight, that will drive the temp down. Then back up to 60 at night and 70's day I feed every other day or so. They are still real active and looking for food.

I'm starting to cut back more and more on their food. Might keep giving them some through this month but will stop by November for sure.

ICSD I kind of calculate feeding on the fish. When my pond went under 55 degrees before last weekend, they didn't seem interested in the food, and I didn't feed them. When I got back from my weekend away, the water was back up to 55. I gauge it from the morning temp, not the afternoon. That way if it's a really cold night, those morning temps are what I go by. Anyhow, my ponds have been staying above 55 all week, so I've fed lightly. But, soon I will quit it altogether. As Colleen said, they will have plenty to eat in the pond, always do, I just LIKE to feed them. :)
JW, back when I lived in a log house, and we burned wood for heat, I remember hearing that fresh pine was not good to burn, it created a larger amount of creosote in the chimney. However, it burns very hot, so that probably gets rid of the creosote. Just make sure to have a really hot time period every day that you burn, so your chimney doesn't get clogged with that crap and you get a fire. You probably already know this, though. I hated messing with pine, also, because of the sap. If the sap has already gone down the trunk for the winter, you don't have to worry about it, but I would guess that in your area it's still sappy! Good luck! Yes, pine creates far more waste than burnable wood, but it's a hot burning wood.

CE that stuff is full of sap right now and we get it on the bottom of our shoes and can hardly walk it is so thick. This wood will sit for a couple yrs before we use it. No sappy stuff going in our stove uh, uh no way! Have lots more dry wood to use for this winter.

RAINING  here now and going to be torrential downpours tomorrow w/ high winds................looking out for power outages but have our handy, dandy generator as backup so no worries :fingersx:

Pine is a no no for chimneys! Very sooty from the sap. This will coat the walls and become a fire hazard. We burn wood also and will never use it. I love a good fire in the winter! As far as feeding i have never feed when the temps get below 40 degrees or if the fish have no interest in feeding. I was just wondering about these new foods and who uses them.

JW why are you cutting those trees down? Just to heat your home or for some other reason?
