I was just discussing that with my husbands friends over dinner and drinks......
I am just putting them on soil and the soil does have some gravel mixed in with it. The "boys" are meeting here in the morning for their weekly golf trip and will take a look at what I have done and set me straight. I'm not sure yet what to do....we are zone 5.

Tmann I have plenty of grass I'd be glad to give you. I would much rather have no grass to mow and lot's of plants, trees, ponds and natural habitat but noooooooooo, we have tons of wide open grass to mow!

Mogsie is that room by your pond your man cave or are women allowed in there too :D
It just looks so inviting in there w/ that nice roaring fire.

We saw something like this at Lowes the other day... I might be able to convince him of this kind...

I like to use wood chips to help control the weeds tmann. We use a wood chipper to make our own but if the power companies that go out and trim and cut down trees are ever in your area you can ask them for the chips that they chip up and they will sometimes bring them and dump them right on your property for free. They really help and don't block out the water like the fine barks can do. Would be a dream of mine to have an all natural wooded property w/ ferns, trees etc. w/ not much maintenance involved. I don't like weeding either and not all my garden beds have the wood chips. The ones that don't are a pain in the buttoosky

i hate weeding too, but mirka enjoys it i just have to keep a watchfull eye as she can sometimes pull out young plants not realising what they are !! lol, i only have a small area of grass left, the rest is taken up with the greenhouse and the vegetable beds and fruit bushes, and soon to lose more grass as ime building ethan a large sand pit in a rear tractor tyre, hey tmann sometimes it feels like a furnace, start by sitting beside the fire and as it gets hotter and hotter you end up moving seat further away, depends what type of logs ime burning, baeya you can get some really nice pre built garden fire boxes, some of them are lots of ££££££'s, i built that one myself with a large chimmney so it took all the smoke away above our heads, hey jw that place is my second home for when mirka gets fed up with me !! lol, it is a great place for entertaining guests, we sit out there quite a lot, i would say the fire is on 2 - 4 nights a week, i even have mini speakers hard wired out there so i can have background music,

Baeya I'm watching closely as you build your bog so I might be able to build a small one someday. I need to see the step by step close pix to help show me the way. Like the pix cuz sometimes I can get lost in the written or verbal explanations, mind starts to wander, lol.
