So this is the page where I can SCREAM! ??

So we live in a small story and a half home and are about to undergo a second floor addition. We are not expanding the brick footprint out, just going up. Some of the red tape we have to deal with before we get a building permit is dealing with forestry. We will need to put a large deposit down with the City to guarantee the safety of the trees on the property. I understand the need as there are many idiots that would just chop down the trees on the lot; HOWEVER we bought the house because it had big trees, and if a construction worker were to even break a branch they would be dealing with ME! Fine rules are rules I understand that. So the builder forgets to send me the forestry report that states a fence will need to be put up to keep the construction away from the trees. A fence is normal, the tree out front of the house will have a fence constructed around it (they told me that). They failed to mention the trees in the far back of the yard will need to be segregated as well. Well yesterday afternoon I get a call at work from my neighbour telling me some guy just fell through the ice in pond while constructing a fence. The dummy built a 2x4 frame with chipboard straight across the middle of the pond! As soon as the snow melts this thing will be floating in my pond. They told me they did not drive any stakes down, I sure hope they are right. I have the bubbler just on the other side and there was a good 20 inch opening, so it was pretty obvious there was water there. Regardless the builder met the other side of me on the phone that he had not met before.

how is it standing then because it needs support .I would have outlined the pond before work started .There is no way they put heavy chip board up with out supports and as it gets wet it will be leeching out chemicals and causing major problems for your fish .Chip board is cheap glued together wood and will get heavy as it gets wet and start to fall apart and fall over .No way they did not stake that unless they know something I don't .Get plastic orange barrier fence instead make them take that down if they damaged the pond they pay .

Holy cow, I bet that building dude found out how cold the water is, too! That's going to be an expensive "fence" if they cut your liner in the fall with tools, nails, etc.! I sure hope all is ok in the pond, and that the person who got wet learned his lesson. With the snow on, that guy obviously didn't maybe know the pond was there, or maybe his boss forgot to tell him? I sure hope they didn't use stakes through your liner. Wow, this remodel may get really expensive!
If I'm seeing your yard correctly, it looks like your house is in an "L" shape around the pond, is that right? And if so, then are you adding on to all of that, or is a garage part of the "L"? Would love to see pics of your house remodel, too. We are all looking for pics of construction this time of year, since most of us have snow and ice and dead stuff in our yards. LOL

How wide is it there where you drew the line where they put it ,plastic fencing is cheaper than that stuff and less work to put up .I would get a tarp also to cover your pond closest to the house .Don't take any chances .The guys sound like idiots and i would put the fencing all the way round the pond also .They were clearing land here burning brush also and dust and smoke and a simple tarp covering the pond saved me a mess and possibly dead fish .Makes me worry addy geeze just sounds so bad .Gosh .

osb or chip board mostly comes in 8 ft wide sheets by 4 ft. high .Heavy heavy when wet and falls apart .Tarps fencing to protect your fish fast really fast .You may need things to put your fish in if they punctured the liner to save them be prepared for the worst but hope for the best .scary

Here they use black plastic on a roll with stakes already attached and all they do is roll it out and pound stakes in .I know had to do it here to protect the stream across the road from run off .

You are right Sissy about all the leaching; this thing will not be here for long. When I got home I took photos of everything. Our neighbour was quick to explain to them how big the pond actually is. They have one stake about a foot in from each side. It is made from three 8 foot panels. So the middle panel is nailed to the other two panels. When the ice melts the centre panel would pull apart (bringing about 20 nails with it) and fall into the pond. The builder was well aware of the pond and so would the fence guys. The forestry report showed the pond there. I just find it bizarre they would even attempt to build it there. They will be moving the fence to the house side of the pond shortly. I want to see them put it up tight against the deck by the hot tub. It is mandatory to use a solid fence in the back. I presume it is because of the size of the trees. If we don’t comply properly we will have to put down 5-10 k in tree deposits, which could take years to get back.
Country, the “L” shape you see is actually the garage separate from the house. As soon as I get some time I will be posting a ton of pictures from the past five years. I doesn’t look like my yard will be very picturesque for the next while.

Here is a picture that shows the garage and house. We are only adding a second floor and gutting the main floor. This house has two bedroom upstairs with a bathroom. The main floor has a bedroom living room and kitchen. When they do the second floor they will but a beam in that will allow us to remove the load bearing walls on the main floor so we can open it up.

Unreal, I can understand protecting the trees, it seems driving stakes in around the trees would be more damaging then just temporary fencing.

Thanks for your thoughts. Mark's mom in on critical hospice care, as of yesterday, his dad is sinking fast. I feel in the next few weeks we will be dealing with two passings.
