My mom is polish/ ukrainian, grandparents immigrated in the early 19 hundred's, not sure when, but the family settled in northern Alberta under the "Homestead ACT" got farmland for free, just had to work the ground and remove the trees. It was hard work back then, everybody had chores to do before and after school, but somehow they still found time to play. The farmland went to the boys in the family after my Grampa died, the girls were "married off" and their husbands were expected to take care of them, that's why only the boys got the farm. I loved that old farm, can remember the long green grass and little old farmhouse with old red barn, the pig pen full of pigs and chickens would run everywhere! The whole family would sit around the table speaking Ukrainian, my grandma used to wear a funny scarf on her head all the time, Grampa and Grandma lived there till the day they died.

I'm 1/4 polish too, cause my mom is half ukrainian and half polish and dad is German. The polish thing was a deep dark secret, never new I was 1/4 polish for years and years, then one day while sitting at my mom's house, out if the blue I asked if she had Grampas and Grandmas marriage Certificate, and was shocked to see that Grampa was listed as born in Poland, and after they got married Grandma had to move to Poland for a while..... then it all suddenly made sense...... for years my husband who is half Ukrainian and understands the language better than me, always said that my moms "Ukrainian" was hard to understand, like she had a different dialect or something, then it hit me, SHE SPEAKS with a POLISH accent!!!

I'm 100% German ... that doesn't happen much anymore either. :)
Congrats Mogsie on the longest thread. Can we have a party now? I think we should all just appear at Mogsie's house and bring the beverages and food ... he surely won't send us away, would he?! :)
Addy, I have one of those Garden Spiders, too! It is still between my deck and pond, right behind the tomato plant that came up volunteer. He was bouncing his web when I was showing him to the neighbor boy. I love those spiders! Neat zig zag design in the middle of the web. Do they bounce the web to attract bugs?

According to this write up she bounces her web if she thinks she is threatened. Neat write up about the spider. She is back in poison ivy land, I could not get real close. Some people toss crickets etc into the web to help feed her.

hey you dont need to bring beverages to my house, i make plenty ! WOW page 200 ! we have come a long way guys, the good banter thread is now over 1 year old, just been looking at page 1, and the main topic of conversation was toad poop !! lol,
ive been doing a bit of work recently aside from my usual job, both for others and also doing some more work in my garden will get some photos posted, infact ime planning on doing one of those pond showcase threads, how is everbody hope all has been well, was sitting by the pond last week and a bumble bee fell onto the water, immediatly the fish started a co-ordinated attack, 1 would grab its legs and pull it underwater then let it go before the bee had chance to sting it, then the next fish would pull it down and let go, and they continued to repeat this process with nearly all the fish joining in until it was drowned, then the big goldfish swallowed it !! was amazed, also worried at 1 point incase one of them got stung, but considering how organised the attack was it makes me wonder how many times they have done it before while i wasnt there !
