I pretty much avoid touching caterpillars of any sort, unless I'm DANG sure it's not going to leave me in pain or with a rash. At least these little guys are very obvious with their defenses! The one time I accidently brushed my hand against one of them I was pushing the pickerel rush aside to take a picture of a frog who was across the way & WHAM! I had no idea what 'stung' me until I inspected the plant & there he was. Now I know to keep a close eye out for them while creeping around the pond late in the Summer.
so...you're saying you have to practice your creeping? :p

What a beautiful creature, but their venom is no laughing matter. One of many to avoid.

Oh, yes! We've seen Buck Moth caterpillars, too. Another scary critter I hope to see WAY before I accidently run across one.

Took the dogs out at bedtime the other night & discovered a few unwanted 'visitors' - Not one, not two, but THREE copperheads right out front where the dogs potty. One on the ground that I noticed as Dinah wandered along, stopping to sniff & standing inches from his tail. I called her back over to me & 'suggested' she go the other direction to pee. I then saw another one hanging out of the wall a couple of feet away from the crawling one, so after the dogs finished up their business, I ran for my snake wrangling equipment (snake tongs & the garbage can) First I nabbed the one on the ground. Then I got a hold of the one half in/half out of the wall & gently eased him out. Then!! I noticed yet another one laid out on the wall about 6" above where the second one had been. Into the can he went as well. Covered the can for the night & went inside to pour myself a bit of a nightcap. They were taken for a ride & relocated the next day. Beautiful snakes, but I don't want them hanging around right outside my front door, thank you!
