Here are a few pics I took yesterday. A lot of the plants are growing in good including creeping jenny, water mint, parrot feathers, and pennyworts. I also got my first lily flower. The floaters are starting to take over. I pulled out about a dozen water lettuces yesterday to keep things in check.

Comet, wish I lived closer! Heading through Chi-town tomorrow, but will be on the Amtrak, heading home from WI, or I would stop by and take any extra water lettuce you have. I will need to try them this year, since your goldies are not eating them, I'll try some in the goldfish pond. Last year, they all died, but only had a few. I have a BUNCH of the water clover and water parsley that is growing extremely well in the goldfish bog. Will for sure be thinning and selling or giving away plants come next year from that bog!
What is the plant in the 4th pic with the yellow flower, next to your tree? Pretty!

tmann that's pennywort. This is my first year with it and it has taken to the pond really well. The fish love swimming through it's roots and it has a different shape from the other plants which compliments the pond. CE. I thought it was creeping jenny but maybe addy is right! Re the floaters I'll be dumping them all summer. I actually threw them in a bucket with water because I didn't have the heart to destroy the first bunch after nurturing them since April. If you know anyone driving through Chicago feel free to send me a message and I'll be happy to give them away. We actually just drove down I 57 to Champaign/Urbana and back again because our daughter registered for U of I for the fall semester on Friday.

My brother is stopping in CU on the way home, as he lives there. Driving to Chicago is too far to drive just for the plants, but my sister is coming this way in August and again in Sept. I'm bringing home a "ditch" grass that I've been in love with since I got here on Friday. Has a very white plume at the top, very narrow head, and very neat. I assume it may be somewhat invasive, but I'm planning to plant a few strands, and the other 2 or 3 in the bog and see how they do. Dug some up across the road from my sister's house. Also bringing home 4 or 5 starts to my BIL's HUGE blue/green very large leafed Hosta. I looked underneath and there were several babies, and he was good with me digging them up to take with me. Sister is bringing an oak tree in Sept. when she comes, her husband transplanted it here 3 years ago, and it has really unique leaves, very pretty, and hoping that it will grow at my house. He has to move it, and he is surrounded by dense woods, so has no place to put it. :) I have all sorts of room. LOL

I saw at least two baby fish in the pond this weekend. One of them had bright colors. I haven't had any babies make it in a couple years. I think all the new plants I added gave the fry some good hiding places. They are still really shy. If they come to the surface I'll try to take a picture of them, but that will probably be weeks away. Also I'm playing daddy to some frog tadpoles. I'm hoping some of them make it. They are really tiny and I am keeping them separate.

Neat Keith you have babies! Plants and crevices and floating plants rings w/ small screen holes make nice safe hiding spots for freshly hatched fish. With all the plants and roots usually some of my fishes eggs end up hatching.
You are lucky w/ having the tadpoles. Frogs never seem to lay any eggs in my pond.
Take pix and post them when you can find the baby fish.

frogs usually won't lay eggs where there are fish, well at least the green frogs, trees frogs and toads that hang out here won't. I always find the eggs in the fish less ponds.

Smart frogs know their babes will get eaten! I'll have to hope they lay some in my bathtub pond next Spring before I put any little fish in there to control the skeeters.

About 2 seasons ago, i put a "wanted gray tree frog tadpoles" ad on Freecycle or Craigslist...this was around Memorial Day. I figured that many around here would be opening up their pools and treefrogs are notorious for laying their eggs in the pool covers. I received a reply and went out to this person's house that had oodles of treefrogs in his pool cover. I think I brought back 5 5gallon buckets (1/2 -3/4 full because of sloshing) of tadpoles and muck from this pond cover. Of course, I did not want to muck to be put in my pond, but I did want the tadpoles for the fish as a source of protein. Well, DH and I put the tadpoles in the kiddy pool and I sat on a chair and sifted w my hands through the muck to retrieve the tadpoles. What a yucky job!! But as DH and I put the tads in the pond, the GF were right there gobbling them up. Now, for those of you who think how cruel, this guy was going to just let the pool cover water, muck, tads and all go onto the ground and the tads would not have a chance at all to develope.Since they were considered waste to him, I considered them food for my GF and we actually had a few that survived and developed into Gray Tree Frogs which as we saw them floating on the plants, we removed them to the trees so they could continue to live. That was one experience that I did not want to duplicate any time soon. Weird what I did for my GF!
