I totally agree, no guarantee our children will stay put ! My daughter is a single Mom and a career gal, her industry ( pharmaceuticals ) is centered in that area, also Boston. I guess we'll have to see how things work out for now as we moved my 85 year old Mom here from out of state last year.

We do have plans to be together at Christmas

Hi Tula. That sounds nice about the holiday get together. We are going to Miami for Thanksgiving to visit our daughter and snl who just moved there. We haven’t seen her two kids since they moved there. It’s only been a month but seems longer! Now they want me to plan a pond for them!?! That would be a nice winter time project if I decide to join “ the great resignation “ ! It seems like everyone is doing that our age now! Just turned 65 a few months ago.…

Two grandkids is all we have and they are staying here in this state as far as I know. Well one is 32 and the other is only 8 so guess things could change someday but I doubt it. The oldest one loves rain so this place is perfect for her. If I could ever choose a place to live it would be right on the ocean somewhere in Southern Cali. but too expensive and don't like their leadership. Not fond of the leaders here either but what ya gonna do? @sissy has it nice in Virginia now I hear

Hi Jw. You are lucky they are close by. For the fun of it we looked at housing prices close to the ocean in Southern California and nothing nice was affordable at all. I guess all the houses have been bid up so much by all the high earners it’s really unaffordable. Our daughter in SF is getting a big increase in rent. We suggested she try to buy something but a nice 1 bedroom in SF is close to a million dollars!

Good news on our kids! Dave and I have 5 kids between us, and they were in 5 different states. Just found out a week ago that my daughter and her family (3 of our 7 grandkids) are moving from ND to IN, and will be 15 minutes from her brother, and 1 hr 45 minutes from us!!! I’m simply ecstatic that both of my kids and 5 of our grandkids will now be within 2 hours … driving distance!!!
Neither of us have any desire to move south. If we do move in the future, it would be slightly farther south from where we are in Cincinnati, but definitely not to FL, TX, AZ, or CA. Dave loves New Mexico, but the northern part with more green and mountains. We just refuse to do the snow bird thing, love having just one home I guess. And we have enough relatives in those southern states to go visit anytime we want so I think that helps.
But, in the end … never say never!!!

We have his parents old house in Florida, but our "snow bird" trips are at the most a month or two, we leave long before all the snow birds arrive. The place becomes 24/7 rush hour.

I might make it 4-5 ft deep.

as long as the water table there will allow you; been a few posts lately suggesting this isn't a great option and you might have to consider half in and half out of the ground!

@CountryEscape , That is fantastic 5 of your grandchildren will be within 2 hours !!! I'd be thrilled with that distance, especially as I just have the one granddaughter. I mailed a package of cute x-mas outfits to her this morning, love looking at baby clothes.

Spent the day cleaning up leaves from our 1 year old cherry tree. Some of the leaves in the water look like fish!

@j.w ; WHAT? You never heard of maple sanke or oak utsuri? They're infamous! I bet Keith's got a whole 'pile' of 'em! And he didn't hafta 'rake' the online auctions to 'fall 'for any of his/his wife's 'pine'-ing for more fish leaves!

Thanks JW. Actually that was the “before“ picture! There were a lot of leaves in the bog that took some time to clean out. Hmmmm… I still get emails about new fish available from one source. The other one I took myself off of their mailing list. Nope haven’t bought any new fish in over a year now…. I think I’m in control of the “addiction”!!

So funny! Yes the Japanese cherry leaves mix very well with the imported Japanese Koi…. Maybe I’ll come up with some new varieties like…..Yoshino Cherry Showas and Nara Blossom Sanke’s!! It reminds me of the tame deer that Nara is so famous for along with it’s beautiful cherry trees. We got to see similar deer two years ago at an Island right off of Hiroshima. The first picture is my wife trying to help someone from getting their lunch taken away from one of the “tame” deer! They were great at being very photogenic so people could take pictures with them or even guarding the door to a restaurant!

The last picture is just a random pond I came across on the trip with some nice Koi.

fer cryin' out loud--can SOMEONE please feed those deer???? I started feelin' sorry for the lunchbag owner until I saw how small and pitiful those deer are!! Maybe if they actually got fed, they'd make it to normal adult height! Oh the shame of it all!

Hey brokensword, have you never seen the tiny deer they grow in Florida? I think if you hit and kill one with your car, you get a hefty fine, besides a dented car! They are the same size. Never knew there were such tiny miniature sized deer.
