but lettuces are a filler, especially iceberg. lettuce has little nutritional value. but yes a salad just isnt a salad without it. but i use spinach in place of lettuce on tacos, and other things. peppers etc are great, mushrooms onions are both great but i dont like them in my smoothies,,,lol did you know mushrooms and onions are both cancer fighters? one small mushroom a day can greatly reduce the risk of breast cancer.

I dont eat much iceburg, just because I like romaine better, but they are still a natural source of some vitamins ... Im not on a diet, so dont care about the filler aspect. Whether a salad or a sandwhich, they need lettuce:) Now the dressing aspect, I wont go there... we can just assume that by the time I get done with all the fixings and dressing, low cal isnt happening here LOL.

I grow aquatic mint and have tea from it from my pond, as well as just chew in the leafs. I will try the water cress and will eat from my pond .... have you see how farmers grow vegetables? I walk by a farmers field every day, the deer run and poo there, and lots of coyotes poo there too...... still better than the vegetables from Mexico, watered frequently with water contaminated by human poo!
I think all vegetables and fruit need to be washed. Even the birds poo in the tree fruit too, we are surrounded by poo, so I think eating fruits and vegatables is risky, but so is life.....

Did you know more people get Ecoli from the vegetables than they do from the meat? But we still eat vegatables. My pond is very healthy and I have not had any fish just up and die mysteriously, so it should be OK. Plus we will only be harvesting the tops of the plant, not the bottom roots that are in then water.

I love it when vegetarians get on those kicks of how they cant eat meat because of ecoli AND salmonella ... I have no disrespect for anyone who chooses to be vegetarian or vegan or what not, just dont use false claims. I dont care if their reason is as simple as they cant eat "Bambi" that to me is a legit reason, but ecoli and salmonella both effect veggies as well as meats ...

I was reading about water cress and it is supposed to be a "super food" and you can mix in salads and other stuff too.
I work in a grocery store and let me tell you, there is much much more recalls concerning vegetables than meat, but if their is just one recall on the meat, the Press blow it out of proportion!

Oh now you got me started! My sisters, love them both, but since they turned vegan they drive me nuts sometimes!
I remember one time there was a recall at some hamburger joint a few years back, all you heard was "don't eat the hamburgers"! Mass panic ensued and people were freaking out over the hamburgers ...... only to later discover the tomato on the hamburger was the culprit! Then they all shut up.... :)

I hear you. Our son works for a grocery store. Has been there for 4 yrs now. Started in the deli, then deli AND prepared foods, but transferred to the meat department in the fall/early winter. I had asked him a couple years ago about cutters (butchers) as they were advertizing for them and the starting wage was really good ... Minimum requirement was 2 yrs of CULINARY school .. sorry, not worth it to my way of thinking ... so now that he is over there, and all their cutters are retiring, and not getting new cutters in, he actually was asked if he was interested in being a cutter ... they will train him ... for each 6 months of the training program (2 years), he will get $1 raise, on top of his normal $0.50 hr raise each 6 months ... Once he completes their in house program, it is a $6 hr raise! Anyways ... since working in the meat department, he has become quite the meat snob. I know exactly when something is going on special, or how old something is LOL. I will also NEVER again buy the cooked meats (such as fried chicken) from prepared foods department. In this major chain, the fried chicken is made from the ALMOST OUT OF DATE chicken that the public didnt buy...
