Turns out the Martin family, just a few months prior to the criminal court case, won a $1 million law suit against the Home Owner Association for the wrongful death, which was a bit odd. Also, I imagine they receive all sorts of money from charity.
FBI and other federal authorities, prior to the criminal court case, did quite exhaustive investigation and found there were zero civil rights violated that lead to the act of the murder.
So now, sounds like the Martin family is going to have a civil case sue the Zim family for the kid's wrongful death, which will be very tough to prove now since the criminal court case proves Zim acted in self defense. So, the civil case might likely only aim for the charity money given to the Zim family for his defense fund and any potential future well being.
