I would really be worried about anything leaching out of the aluminum. We already know that it's not good for humans, and going by size, I doubt it would take much to harm a hummingbird! As for the 'greeting', the males seem to do that even if the feeders are full. Females return about a week after the males (at least around here), and seldom do that.

OK, so that was my thought, Haro. So, if the aluminum leaches into the water for the hummers, why in the world would they make it that way? Geesh ... it's really cute, too, and if my computer was running faster, I would post a pic. I loved the idea of using a mason jar, if the jar ever broke, but not the base is worthless. Maybe I'll get a plastic one this time, since the wind tends to blow them off of my deck railing and break them. Ho hum .... Hummers, you will have to be a bit more patient this year!
And, I never thought about it, but you're right, the males are the ones that come up front and center to announce themselves. I should post the video of the Praying Mantis trying to catch the hummer I took I think 2 summers ago while sitting on my deck. What a hoot! But, alas, this is a frogs only thread. :)

I commented a week or two ago as the frog scene seemed quite low and was advising of the fish and newt I had already got. I'm still building my ponds. Just tested the pump and water feature which was successful .. Anyway... I know already have 3 frogs and the newt... Going well so far! Two of the dogs have where sitting together and going around this evening together so hoping for future tadpoles maybe. What seasons do they mate, and what would they need to provide good places for them for laying ?

Haha!!! Yes I did mean frogs. I would love to have dogs too but I don't at the moment.

Who ever thought of calling it autocorrect.. It rarely corrects it, just picks a random word.

Well... Thought I might confirm it is actually FROGS I'm talking about ..

Here are the two spending yesterday lunch time together ..

And ever since he lighter one has not moved.. Stayed in side that plant for the whole of today, I've been able to watch closely all the time. Could this be signs?

Here's my other frog taken to the second pond.. Spying on me whilst I was working on the hose.

Lastly, sadly I don't have a pic, I no longer have one newt, but two swimming round together. Maybe soon babies of frogs and newts. So pleased it's all taken to my pond within a month of starting the dig!

Where are you located, Mr. Pond? I agree, those frogs were having an "interlude" during lunchtime, it appears! I've never seen a newt, so I'm curious where you are, what climate you live in, that you have newts in your pond. How cool is that?!
As far as what to do to provide a good place for them to lay their eggs? Seems they have already chosen your pond. I've had toad eggs, but can't say I've seen frog eggs, so someone else will have to say where they typically lay them. My guess is if you have shallower water, or lilies or some type of plants (I saw water parsley/celery), they will lay them in those areas. Do you have any fish yet? If not, you will have much better chance of eggs and tadpoles surviving. Good luck!

Where are you located, Mr. Pond? !

Morning CountryEscape! I've updated my profile as so,e one mentione it before so hopefully it will be showing now? I'm from UK. Northamptonshire.
The newts are pretty amazing, they swim through the oxygenating plants so quickly. You'll see them pop up for air then dart back down.

I posted the pic previously but just so you can see..

I do t have fish, not planning to. Just wanted a wildlife pond. I'm feeling pretty successful at that. Frogs, newts, seems to be a big bird pool as they dip in it too, and now had my first dragonfly over the weekend too.

I have 2 ponds connected. The shelf varies on each to try to provide as many different sections as possible. Here's the current progress earlier I'm the weekend.

Wow... My story keeps moving so quickly... This morning I find the 2 newts and 2 frogs all together... One newt is being followed by the other when they swam away and has some eggs on its foot. At first I was worried this is the frogs, as I have read they can eat frogspawn.

However looking at the pics this could be newt spawn, as they are white in colour not black?

Gutted I now have to go work and can't watch them!

Oh Mr. Pond, why are you so far away. If you are closer I'd shamlessly asked for some frog eggs for my wildlife pond...

no frog visitor yet. My only tadpole (that I got from a ditch) seems to disappeared. May be coz it got so cold lately... was about 45 F last night (but 70s in the daytime).

Haha sorry Nepen, I'm sure if they do I would of gladly as I may be overrun soon! I wasn't sure how it was going to go and some friends had some tadpoles which I put in my second pond. They've grown really well. Weather here at the moment is gorgeous. We had a storm the other night but since then.. Lovely sunny hot weather, not sure it will last.

Only worry now is I'm off for a week soon, won't be able to keep an eye on them

Hope you find your tadpole. Many times I have thought the frogs had left my pond and then they just pop up again. :)

I'm so happy froggy is still here by pop demand. So last weekend I built some more rail cars to navigate my aqueduct and moved one this mornin and to my surprise a peeper was peeping out from under one; I carefully moved the car back into place so it had shade and place to hide from the nasty neighborhood loose cats that eat froggies; they're beginning their froggy chorus as I type; cute little things with loud voices; you have to look closely to find froggy between the 2 rail cars
