here is a question for you frog gurus! I notice that at night, my frogs all get out of the pond and sit on the rocks around the edge. I assume they are drying off before hopping off into the yard? Are they going hunting for bugs? What are they doing?

Yes! It was like clockwork for my frogs last year. As soon as it was getting dark, they would all hop out of the water and move around. Hunting for their food. It was really fascinating. I never really saw them catch anything, but they must have been because they were around all year. I'm not sure if there is any intended purpose for why you see them on the rocks, other than it may be their first hunting spot before they spread out.

My frogs hang out on the edges of the pond, only jump in when I come by. The green frogs do a lot of floating, the bullfrogs, do more side pond hanging out in the rocks.
The toads invade the water to breed then go away again.

I can hear the frogs as I sit and read your posts tonight at almost 10pm. It feels really good to hear them yakking away ..............like all the world is at peace and not a stinking thing is going wrong out there

Here's the bullfrog I took pic of last week, hanging out in the goldfish pond, under a branch that angles into the water.

And, then today I noticed a Northern Cricket frog! I'd not seen one of these type of little guys (he's about 1" long) since 3 years ago when I built the koi pond! Hoping more of them will come.

You have all different kinds of neat looking frogs CE :)
I've only seen two small different ones here so far.

Actually, I have bullfrogs, and toads, typically. Usually I'll see a few leopard frogs, and sometimes the tiny "peeper" frogs and now these Cricket frogs. I guess that's a few but I sure would love to have tree frogs (I hear them, never see them though ...) in all those bright colors. Maybe I had to live in the Amazon or somewhere like that to get the pretty colors. Oh, and maybe the brighter colored ones are poisonous, so don't want those either! So, I will settle for what decides to come here. I guess it's nice that there is an existing farm pond on the property for many years, and I got LOTS of wildlife from there (turtles, frogs, etc.). :)

My Green Frog was sitting out again today watching as I installed my new pond. I dropped an insect by it and it gladly ate it right up.

Now with the larger pond and soon-to-be bog, I'm going to have to monitor my Frog situation. I don't mind Green Frogs, Leopard Frogs, Pickerel Frogs, or Bull Frogs, but I hope to keep Western Chorus Frogs and Toads from mating here, with my pond being so close to the house, not to mention we have a neighbor that would be glad to call the cops on us for noise. (Cranky old man. Once called the cops because he thought I had a camera aimed at his property, it was a weather censor ). Our other neighbors are all great, friendly people. There's always one rotten apple, though. anyway, where was I? :ROFLMAO:

There is no way your neighbor can call the cops on you for noise when it's NATURE! Geesh, what a jerk. I'm soooo glad to have only 2 neighbors, and they are both at least a 2 acre field away from my house. However, the new neighbor that moved there last year as a pit bull that barks nearly all night long. Didn't bother me until I had windows open last night. I finally hollered at him to SHUT UP ... and believe me I can holler! LOL He didn't stay quiet, but I hope I woke his "parents" to get a response. Probably not, but it made me feel better. Glad he's not in the yard next to my house at least. Ambien would have made me not care but try not to take that more than a couple times a week. :)

I was out walking at the creek near the house (Duke U. property) yesterday looking for tadpole... saw none. I saw two frogs jumped in the water so I know there're frogs/toad there.

Anybody had frog lay eggs in the pond yet? I dont see it here yet.. may be coz it's still a little cold?

We have some Spotted Southern Leopard Frogs that have called our pond home since day 1. Though I've never seen anything but toad eggs, there is a newer & smaller little guy who I just saw for the first time yesterday. One of the older ones has gotten very big -- in fact, for a while I thought he was a young bullfrog, but when I looked them up, he doesn't have BF characteristics.

This is a pic of one of the Leopards who has made his home in a tote in the back yard. It's nasty, too. It's full of gravel and gunk that I've dredged from the bottom of the pond, and I'll throw a few plants in the water. Little froggy just floats there, watching, then if you get too close, he dives down and buries in the gravel.

So far, not hearing any calling by any other frogs/toads [well, not true -- have heard some, but not at our house], no tadpoles yet. But it's still early.

They sing every night here now. Don't see a bunch and no eggs or tadpoles but maybe there are some and I just don't see them. I have a few tubs of water around the property w/ water and plants in them and I would think they would like it in there.

I looked at my farm pond this past weekend, and didn't see any tadpoles yet. I have mainly bullfrogs, so none of them visible yet. There is the overflow area (keep in mind my pond is on flat ground, so the "overflow" is simply low end where it goes when too much rain) that the taddies typically are found in, and all I saw were minnows. I'll keep a look out for them and let you know if I see them.
Not hearing any frogs of any kind singing around here, so when you hear them croaking, THEN you know the hanky panky is happening, and eggs will be laid. After that, another couple of weeks and you should find some tadpoles. Good luck!
