I saw a toad in my window well yesterday. Pouring down rain, like a waterfall over that window well, causes the water to get in there and overflow in the basement, even though I have a cover over the well. Anyhow, put on rain coat, braved the waterfall and bailed out the well. Found the toad so moved him to "higher ground", right next to my house, 2' from the well, and under pile of leaves at base of vining tower for clematis plants. Hoping he stays there or finds himself a warmer place to go to hibernate. Guess he must have been in the dirt/mud when we were in the deep freeze, as I'm positive that ground had to be frozen solid in there before we warmed up this week!

:( Found a deceased frog on the bottom of my pond today :( I removed the gravel and overgrown lilies from the bottom of my pond this fall…….wonder if poor froggy just didn't have enough debris to over winter in. Felt sad and hope I didn't make a mistake removing the gravel…..don't want a barren landscape.

Poor froggy. Seems like if they could not find a place w/enough junk on the bottom they would hit the road and find some other place to sleep. I find them in weird places around here. Inside my hose reel, wood shed, in my lawn cushion storage bins etc. Don't know if any are on the bottom of my pond. If they are they have a lot of gunk to hide in this year cuz I never got around to netting it out

Tula, if you have any plants in the pond, they can go into the pots just as well. I had bullfrogs I spotted on the edge of my pond, about 6-8" down, and wondered if they had frozen there or were hibernating there. Turns out when the ice was all gone, they were still in same position, dead. I wondered if they got stuck between the rocks on the edge, and the ice killed them. But, lo and behold, others came so survival of the fittest. Also found a few in my Skippy filter when I cleaned it out this past spring. They must have decided that was a good place to hibernate, and since I didn't have the one-way valve, the water siphoned out when I shut it off, thus killing them with no water to live in, and freezing temps. Learning as I go...

Sorry to hear. That's my fear right now. Its my pond's first winter and there was only a thin layer of muck built up on the bottom. I have a bunch of Hornwort at the bottom and 2 small pots too, so I'm hoping its enough for them. So far, I've see three frogs alive and appeared to be ok, I have 4 frogs total. Now it's just a waiting game. Really hoping winter wraps up in March rather than April.

Well, thanks to my darn koi, I placed bird netting around my plant pots and zip tied them securely….in hopes I can have some beautiful plants. I have to admit, I'm second guessing my decision to rehome all my comet and shubunkin in favor of my koi. The pond looks barren without the gravel and beautiful plants that had naturalized in the gravel.

Well, come Spring I'll be better able to tell which direction I"m headed with my pond.

I don't have much if any muck on the bottom, have netted it out pretty much every year. The frogs always come back, they find a place to hide for the winter. Have never found any dead ones.

Agree with Addy. Probably the dumber ones are the ones that try to stay in the ponds. Smarter ones should be hiding in the ground/mud before it freezes, or in deep mulch areas. Maybe fullfrogs always hibernate under water, not positive, and that's what I have. I never worry, because there are plenty where these came from, and sooner or later the word will get out where they need to go for winter. I'll be patient until they learn. I don't like dragging out dead frog bodies either.

This is probably the closest I will get to a picture of a frog for a while. This is my "Merry Christmas to me" ornament. The Hallmark store by me always has 50% off day after Christmas, but today it was "only" 40% off. Still a good deal, especially since some of the ornaments were going for nearly double the asking price on Ebay 2 weeks before Christmas! And, they were not wold out. Anyhow, I wanted this one really bad, the 3 frogs' mouths open and close in sync to them singing Jingle Bells. But, I was too cheap to buy it for myself until it went on sale. Very happy!
