Neat pics, JW, and those eyes look like 24 karat gold!
This is just my opinion, and I've seen the pics of the frogs eating birds, etc., but I don't think they have a chance to catch baby fish, except for maybe the tiny fry. My frogs are all above water feeders. I've never seen then swim after something under water. I do, however, see them jump into the water and swim fast to the bottom to hide, but never seen them go after anything. When they hit the water, anything in their path has scattered. It seems to me that they are bug catchers, and I welcome them for that. I feed them Japanese beetles, which it shocks me they like them, but I'm thrilled! I have a bunch of huge bugs that look like fat mosquitos and very large. I don't think they are mosquito hawks, although they may be, but they are fatter. Anyhow, they are everywhere, and when they land close to the pond, there is usually a frog close enough to snatch it up. I'm sure they are catching damsel flies and maybe dragon flies, too, but again, that's nature. I do know that I have not yet had a mosquito bite, and have no idea why. Maybe I'm not outside after dusk, but I'm usually out UNTIL dusk. I give frogs, fish and turtles credit for that!

This baby bullfrog is on a rock that is no more than 12" wide, so that gives you an idea of his size. Pretty small, but I have yet to see any bullfrog tadpoles. Last year I had them in the bog (which is behind the little fella) when I reworked it, and didn't know they were they before that, so maybe they are in there and I never see them.

And, I thought this looked like a tree frog of some sort, but when I looked closer I see it's a leopard frog. Thank goodness for my zoom working on new camera. :)

Frogs are going nuts this morning sitting on the pond rocks on the edge, and jumping high onto plants to nab bugs. All I see is the plant getting hit and swaying, and then long legs hitting the ground. FAST!

Still some tadpoles in the small pond, but seeing plenty of frogs now.

All though they're still quite small, no mistaking they're frogs they can jump.

This little chap decided to explore the Iris.

you gyz putting me to shame with all the neat froggy fotos; I really need to try to stalk and shoot the tree frogs (with camera).

I think snakes ate up my normal frogs (not tree frogs). Tree froggies seem to have a good advantage of being wary, just a hunch

also, nice to see posts from across the pond in UK

Whilst tidying around the wildlife pond this afternoon I saw a sad sight, a little froglet dried up dead on a pebble just inches from the water.
I do hope it was a one off and the others make it to adulthood.

Don't count on it.
Maybe 1 in 100 of those little frogs ever make it to adulthood without some sort of intervention. It's a cruel world out there.

You think that is sad, about a month ago I was finishing up some landscaping around the pond and came in the house for a drink. Because I was just in and out I didn't want to bother to take off my boots (which my wife hates), and sure enough on the way out again I noticed some dirt or something on the floor that obviously came off the bottom of my boots. Like the good husband that I am I immediately went over to clean it it up, that's when I realised it was a little tree frog, still alive, but clearly mortally wounded from being stepped on.

Aw shucks, Mucky. Sad, but as you said, it's a cruel world out there. I have yet to see a baby toad, but I've been seeing some pretty small bullfrogs, maybe 2" tops, so at least I know those are multiplying, or maybe they are hopping over from the farm pond. Sure haven't seen any tadpoles at all this year from the bullfrogs ...

Found this guy Today. It's only the second frog I've ever found by the pond.

Went to the Aquatic Centre during my lunch hour to scout out some oxygenating and marginal plants for my pond. The Centre didn't have much choice today but I did come across a Frogitat, which I just add to have.

Stuck it in a shady area close to the pond:

Hopefully this will give the any frogs that survive to adulthood a safe place to hide from my cat.
