Some of my frogs have developed the habit of coming out of the pond at night and into the courtyard area to look for food, which requires some human intervention to return them to the pond because they can’t get back up into the raised pond area on their own. . As soon as the sun goes down they start to make their move. Last night I hung around and watched them, but I head them off this time before they actually made the jump down the 18" level from the raised pond area to the courtyard floor, which requires human assistance to get back up from to nget back into the pond.
I head them off and fed them some crickets which I bought specifically for them as a treat instead of the worms I normally feed them. They have gotten so use to being fed by me they will take the crickets right out of my hand.
I had to take a picture of this one. While I was on the right side of the pond feeding one frog this guy hopped out the left side and found the food source and was waiting patiently for his dinner, hoping to catch a few escapees‘.

They must have all got their fill last night, because I didn't have to pick any frogs up off the courtyard floor this morning and return them to the pond.

Thanks for the tip on finding your frog and I do see something there where you said to look but I can't make it out well so I'll take your word for it Doug. I even got out my magnifying glass :rolleyes:

Mucky that is a cute photo and you should enter it in the photo contest!

CE wish I had some visiting turtles to my pond but that is unheard of here. I'll just enjoy the fun you are having w/ all of yours :razz:

Mucky;
Your frogs can't jump 18"??? Maybe you're not feeding them enough. Ours can easily get up onto the water table (at the garden centre), which is 32" to the rim, and into a raised water lily display, 36" high! Maybe give them a little less iron in their diet.

Well John, maybe my biggest frogs could just clear 18", on a really good day, but no way on Earth could they ever make a 36" jump. You must have either some very large frogs there, or they are some kind of super frogs.
Please tell us what kind of frogs they are? and upload a video of them jumping up on that table, I want to see these Super Frogs.

Mucky, I tend to agree with Haro. I've seen my leopard frogs easily jump 24" in one stride. The bullfrogs go a long ways, too. There was a time that one jumped from the near side of the koi pond to over halfway across it before it hit the water, and at that point, it's 8' across. I know that sounds unreal, but those legs are made for jumping. I think your frogs are hoping you will feed them before you put them back in the pond. Plus, they are likely finding bugs on your patio during the night, so might be a good thing to let them stay out all night. And, if there are none there in the a.m. .... maybe they jumped back. :) But, I would be with you and return them to the pond if for no other reason, than to try to keep them there for your benefit. That frog looks like he's staring at the crickets, hoping one will come out of the "shell".
Figgy, those are some tiny babies, and soooo cute! I wish I had been able to see some of the babies from the hundreds of toad eggs, but I have a feeling something feasted on the tadpoles before they made it to toads.

I put a frog in a home depot bucket, just to move it, one leg twitch and the sucker was out of the bucket and gone. Not sure how deep one of those buckets is.

Hey, Figgy, what type of plant is that the baby frogs are on? It looks like it could be invasive, but also looks like it has a healthy root system and multiplies well,and covers the area pretty densely. I'd like to check into getting some, if it's available in the States.

I am thinking it is FrogBit or Duck Weed...but could be mistaken. Here is my kiddy pool earlier this Spring and then recently. I have not planted nor added any to it since last year. It is invasive, but my fish love it. From what I have read, in the fall, it falls to the bottom of the pond and in spring it reappears. I feed a couple good handfuls sometimes 2X/day and more reproduces in the kiddy pool. There is muck under the plants. All the fish absolutely love it and will not allow it to overtake my pond.

I was thinking the same thing, Shoestring. It looks bigger than it is, due to the tiny size of the baby frogs. I almost got some of that, because they said it was NOT duck weed, and was easily removed from the pond if necessary, but never went with the purchase. Looks like a good oxygenator and hiding place for babies, too.
