A few Koi, a few goldfish and I would like to try out some tropical fish if my water does not get too cold for them.
Remember also that koi and goldfish do cross breed. I don't have koi, I think I recall people saying the babies are sterile.
I stayed with just goldfish shubunkins, poor mans koi. They do have great colors, don't get as big as koi and easy to care for.

Thanks for all the input guys/gals! Fish wise as mentioned I will try my best to keep it lightly stocked (but I have to admit I'm not sure exactly what that means fish wise) I hope to throw guppies in there to control mosquitos. Other than that I was thinking 12-15 misc fish. A few Koi, a few goldfish and I would like to try out some tropical fish if my water does not get too cold for them.
GBBUDD- I made it through 20 pages of your thread so far. Amazing! After looking at that and a few other peoples bogs I will be adding on after the first phase of the pond is complete.
I'm no expert but theres many here with more years of experience then I. But more then happy to help. I wish i had made a list and put it up to the forum and get the input from others here. Like Jhn with making pockets in the dirt before laying downhearted liner to control roots. or lisa with a negative edge instead of a skimmer theres a lot to consider that will be written in stone sorta speak once you start the liner.

I was hoping that the plants would be my main filter but yes the one skimmer and the falls will be my only mechanical filtration unless I hear from you all otherwise. The filter falls will work from 6000-8000gph.

Yup, plants are another way to filter. I'm terrible with plants and hate messing with them, hence all the filters, lol.

If you are having to hold back the soils with dry conditions i would be cautious about having only one or two shelves. are you planning on installing boulders in the pond? or basketball sized ? or none at all ?

Ditto what Addy said. Minnows will multiply quickly, as well. If you are going to start with a few just to control mosquitoes, I would say go with some pretty goldfish (Shubunkins). Don’t be in a big hurry, as you’re going to be busy getting your water parameters adjusted in the beginning so you only want a few fish when you start out.

Looking at your photo it makes me think about hair algae the only places it grows when it surfaces is in fast flowing waters i wonder if you wouldn't be better off making several small ponds at your curves in the stream and have the water come out from there. I started a post with some impressive pond builds there is one thats on the side of a hill with what i am referring to actually there is several . https://www.gardenpondforum.com/threads/some-very-impressive-pond-builds.26353/
An other question how far from the pond is the bog ? your going to need a good amount of flow to a big bog for a pond that size. To push that mush water that ar up the hill may be a massive pump and the electricity may get expensive. Aquascapes has said in many a video i have seen that they will help in the design of our ponds i didn't take advantage of it because i didn't know for one and the over all cost i did more dyi things they may not have been happy with but i think it would be worth the call. this corvid 19 has put a bit of a hurt on them as well it may work to your benefit.

I was having issues with the sides from lots of rain. Its not unheard of for us to get 8-10" of rain in 24 hours. I was planning on using basketball size rocks for the walls. Bad idea?

I'm not in a hurry for fish. Just want some smaller mosquito eaters from the start.

Wow Impressive rock work in those videos. I'm concerned I'm going to be able to get that creative. I did plan on having a few 18-24" verticals falls and then a few bog or ponding areas in the water fall.
I was looking for a spot today for the bog and I'm thinking I will put it in-between the waterfalls where they split. I would say its roughly 12' wide 12' at the bottom. It may be a bit smaller than what is optimal but I think its a great spot for it. I can always add another one on one of the sides at a later date.
I'm looking at the two speed pumps you are using. I can run it on the slow speed at night to save on electricity.

For a 6 foot tall wall stacked with basketball sized rocks id be very concerned about if someone is swimming in the pond. or just doing maintenance that the stack is way to unstable as a Vertical wall the walls should be pitched but even then there own weight can put enough pressure to pick up/ push out a weak link lower in the pile and start a house of cards. It should be mortar. Or like the aquascape builds for 6 feet they if using smaller rock would do 2 foot tall shelves even at that your looking at 3 rows of twelve inch rocks bottom row partly buried by rocks on the floor then the same row needs to be 4 too 6 inches higher to hold back the rock on the next shelf. and I little angle on the wall would be easier to build. But to me if you have watched my videos underwater large boulders to me look way cool very natural and it can be very stable but keep in mind if a big rock shifts it could be big trouble for a swimmer. Yes its harder to set the big boys but it can go very fast to. Making caves is easy.

I run a 12000 gph pump but I do not send that much to the bog. I have it split 2 ways a 3" pipe runs 40 feet to the Bogs then splits to two 2" lines one to the aquablocks bog and the other to the peastone bog both with ball valves to control the flow rate. then a 2" line that goes into the pond as two return jets creating circulation. I believe I have a little to much back pressure I may be choking the pump a little but it does not whine in anyway. With your pond I would look hard at circulating pumps to the pond alone its good size they do have power heads similar to an aquranium.

the bog half way up the stream is an interesting idea and if you find you do need more you can place it up at the top. ANOTHER idea I had last night where your in Hawaii is to have water pushing up the surface not like a fountain but like a bubling rock but put a red light in it alone " I do hate colored lights but in your case it could look like lava . though to me it sounds cool you being 6000 miles closer to lava then I may sound like a realy bad idea. I was thinking at the very top of the stream.

I was planning on trying to get the liner in today but after think about this I have decided to wait. I was a bit concerned about this with our earthquakes but I think I need to redo the one tallest wall. It’s a 90 degree wall. I was just going to use pond foam to tie all the rock together but I think I will cut another shelf in at 3-4’ high and get rid of that huge wall. Thanks for the advice.

I’m leaning going that route as well. Hoping to speak with a salesman today that is knowledgeable and can confirm this would be the correct size for me. Thanks
