Last year I had the defuser about 5 ft. from the heater. This winter maybe I will experiment and put it closer to the heater to see if it makes a difference. I will test it on days when the temp. outside is close to the same.
This is what I use for the top of the pond, it is made by Taylor.

This one is for the bottom of pond made by La Crosse Technology. It is housed in the container that my air pump is in. Had this same one last winter but the capillary line got broken. I believe a fish may have bit it. So with this new one I enclosed the line in air tubing.

Beauty, where do I find this bottom thermometer with the probe line? I can web search, but maybe you have a good source. And how much?

SAme temp and ice as you Mrs Hatter but without the extra snow.

More expert info. THis guy builds ponds and suggests that the bottom heater method and aeration is best for our cold winters. I still will get some temp readings for my own.

I think I got it at Lowes. Don't remember what I paid for it but it wasn't to spendy. This is something you would put in your house on the wall and put the probe outside, probably thru a hole in your wall to the outside. You might beable to find something there but if you can't let me know could probably send you one for the price of the themometer plus freight.

My pond was open most of the winter. A few times it did freeze but thanks to the air pump and defuser I still had a good opening for gas exchange. If I would'nt of had those I think it would of been frozen over more.

Home depot does not have them. WE talking about the one with the probe and line so I can use it for under water read outs.

That's just beauty for you to do thanks. I will check locally first. What's the model # of yours. Does it take batteries? Probably will not be good to stay out in cold temps all winter, but you have done it right.

Well looks like the idea that the bottom temp is warmer then the top is BS. With a cheapy HomeD non mercury thermometer in the deepest part it reads 0C or 32F on top and bottom. I think it's out a few degrees but still is not near the recommended 40F for Koi. And this is with a heater.

I'd question the thermometer! It can't be 32 on the bottom obviously! Was this a unit with a remote sensor? No way you can pull it up fast enough and than into cold air and take a reading.

If the water is too turbulent it will chill the whole body of water off to the same temperture. Maybe your "volcano" is moving too much water, try turning it off or down and wait a day and take another reading. Warm water does settle, but can't if it is being churned up too much, Mr. Wayne.

No a cheapy with no sensor and it's out a couple degrees as in lower. So it's probably 2C or 33F. Maybe because it uses some other chemical then mercury? First time I saw a non mercury one.

Why not it's not like I'm taking it from outside to inside to read it. I can pull it up in seconds.

Yes I was thinking that as well. Turn off aerator and use the surface pump and see if any difference.
