It was down to 27 night before last here, too, Keith, but warming up nicely this morning already. At least the sun is shining brightly, although it gives you the impression it's warm outside, and yesterday it was NOT! Going to be nice this weekend, though, if those weather people can please be right for once this year!

Colleen I have been jealous of your weather for a month now and trying to figure it out. :)

Keith I have been lucky that most of our lows are above freezing. If it does refereeze at night, it isn't that thick and melts during the day.

Somewhere over winter the aerator stopped working. Not sure if the air line froze closed at the water level or not. It's still encased in ice so have to wait & see. Next year I will leave it off over winter.

Here are some pics. I think I have seen fish hanging out in the algae field in the stream, not sure what they are doing there.

Your freeze is going away herz and maybe those fish are getting the munchies and nibbling a bit on that algae or could it be it's nice and cozy, soft and warmer in there?

Never thought of that sissy, but I would have to make sure there was no water in the PVC at all or it would crack.

Not sure JW, at first I thought getting ready to spawn, but realized, way to early. Could be both the reasons you gave, they make the most sense.

Well if your weather is warming up those fish could be thinking spawning as in past yrs on a nice warm day in Spring out of the blue I'd see mine doing the chasey, chase dance or maybe they are just checking out the algae beds for their future use, 1st come first serve ya know :luxlove:

I don't know why I am having such nice warm weather these days, must just be a freak of nature that I am warmer than you!
Currently tonight I see that I am at 39 degrees and you are only 33 degrees, I think the whole east coast is colder than normal this year too.

It's getting better Colleen, it was 49 degrees last night for some odd reason, but will have a couple days coming up with highs of only 40 or so, but getting better. Most of the snow is melted in the yard & seems like all of it in the pond is gone. Probably gonna do some updates before I turn everything on, plus I want to make sure any water frozen in the pipes is melted before I do.

Colleen,
The same thing happened to us last year here. The temps were in the 60s-70s during march and everything popped up and bloomed early and then it got back down to normal temps with some freezing in April. It killed most of the Door Peninsula cherry crop.

The worst problem I've had this year so far has been the rabbits. The have eaten several of my evergreens and other plants severely and pretty much aparently been wreaking havoc all winter. It will be interesting to see if some of them survive or what happens with them. If some of the worst live, I will probably turn them into bonsai if possible to take advantage of the devestation.

I have a few small changes to make this spring/summer and will post pics as I do. Also all the snow around the pond melted!! Can see the fish, water is a little cloudy, but not worried since it should clear once I turn the stream on. I think I will add some kitty litter somewhere to help fight the string algae this year, but also might be resigned to just pulling some of it out and living with the rest since in the shallows the frogs love it, I'm sure it helps to filter the water, and I've yet to see a natural pond without it which is a bit of the design/look I have been going for.
