Who knows.................. with our flipping weather it can go up and down at any time. The bees fly all winter which causes us issues with keeping them from starving. We were 74f today, 32f in the am, yesterday 24 f in the am

dayum! 50F temp swings? Sheesh, that's gotta put stress on them! (and you!)

Yes it is hard on the bees, they fly out looking for food and find none. Come back I and eat up their winter stores. I can tell they are processing the winter honey, they are inhaling water.

if you somehow had a greenhouse right nearby the hives and it was filled with bee-friendly plants/flowers i.e. annuals, could that become their go-to during the winter? Just musing here...

Darn it, I keep on forgetting and then I have to go back, edit and stick it in there but sometimes it's too late to edit. There is a time limit. I like it that size as I tried it smaller and too hard to read the "of animated gifs" part.

For 17 hives we would need acres of green houses, then you need to make sure the plants produce nectar, some in the am some in the afternoon and produce all winter. The power bill would be through the roof!

I make sugar blocks for them, put on top of the hive. As they eat their way up they will find the blocks. They only eat up, never sideways never down. When they are clustered ie cold and they move as a ball up the hive.

They slow down on flying once we stay below 40 the problem here is our temps jump around so much. We no longer get just cold and stay cold.
The ponds have been staying liquid almost the entire winter, of course we could get hit with a cold winter, maybe. Saying this year just wet and cold minimal snow.
Living here as a kid, we had horrendous ice storms, dad made a skating rink in our back yard, stayed frozen all winter, never again here.

Hard to put out seeds in the late fall for growth in the spring, we get a warm spell they grow, then a freeze, they die.
