Dr. Sir John,
You did indeed guess the names of my "snow girls". They are not my children, of course, they are just the warm spring months of the year. April , May and June. That was a joke my neighboor told me a few years back.
I don't know how many different places any of you have lived during your life. I have pretty much called this area of Nebraska my home since birth. It is not too bad here when it comes to the weather. I don't think there are very many places in the world where you could escape the wrath of mother nature entirely.
We have tornados, extreme straight-line winds, blizzards, floods, lightning, droughts and heat waves with high humidity.
But others have hurricanes and earthquakes and droughts and floods and what not, too.
Our Nebraska weather usually changes quickly. It's a common joke to say "If you don't like it, wait a minute."
Back in 2009-2010 we had some pretty good snows. Between my house and the neighboors there was a drift that was over the tops of our eaves and the ground dipped down between our houses about 3 to 4 feet as well. So the drift was probably close to 18-20 feet deep at its highest point and about 60 feet long and 30 feet wide. April, May and June took care of all that snow for us.
During the next spring and summer our local rivers, the Elkhorn and the Platte experienced extremely high water levels and flooding. The Elkhorn River flooded in a MAJOR way marking a record as a 500 year flood. The next year we were in a severe drought with extremely hot temperatures and these rivers dried up and our largest reservoir dwindled in size to half its normal capacity. However, the 2011 spring brought massive flooding on the Missouri River. Never seen or heard of anything like it in my lifetime. It was a fantastic flood! Then we went right back into a drought. In 2012 we experienced the warmest winter in decades and now we are experiencing the coldest winter in decades.
It is all messed up! But, that is Nebraska weather.
